What motivated you to become a ClarkLEADER?
I was motivated to become a ClarkLEADER because I wanted to share my experiences with the incoming freshmen. My experience as a freshman last year wasn't always perfect, and that's okay. I want to show students that they don't always have to be perfect and that the college experience, especially in engineering, is all about learning. I also want to give students advice so they can be successful in their academics and in adjusting to college life. It's always helpful to hear from someone who has first-hand experience, and I'd love to be able give incoming students the opportunity to have that.
What are some organizations or extracurricular activities you think new students should know about?
ASCE is a great club for civil engineering majors who want to meet other civil students and want to learn about the other civil clubs on campus. It also has great networking opportunities.
Filipino Cultural Association (FCA) and the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) were two cultural clubs that I joined for fun. They had lots of great events to meet people with similar interests and had lots of fun activities throughout the year.
What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new Maryland Engineering students?
One piece of advice I'd like to give is to not get discouraged when classes get tough. When a class gets hard, it is up to you to what happens next. College is really what you make it, so it's up to you to make sure you stay motivated and on top of your schedule. Engineering is not intimidating! As long as you put in effort and hard work, anyone can excel.
