Below is guidance and steps to take to prepare for and submit an Exception to Policy request.

  • Prepare a personal statement that clearly states the nature of the request and for what term.
    • If a request crosses over between two types of ETPs, pick one type but make sure to reference the second type of request within the personal statement.
  • If a request involves any of the following, prepare and provide the appropriate documentation:
    • Illness/Injury: official medical documentation
    • Death: copy of a program and/or obituary
    • Mental Health/Illness: official letter from medical provider
  • Prepare a time management plan that outlines how each day will be spent to achieve the academic goal
  • Prepare a graduation plan that is approved by an academic advisor.  The graduation plan must list all remaining degree requirements and the order in which the courses will be completed.
  • Prepare a list of any extra curricular activities (work, clubs, sports, etc.) and amount of time dedicated to each activity.
  • Be sure to select the ETP request that best represents the situation.
  • Set aside at least 30-45 minutes to submit the request.
  • Be sure to complete each field in the form.
  • Attach supporting documentation in the appropriate fields on the form.
  • Review information provided to ensure accurate information is provided (ie: UID is correct, course # is correct, correct term is selected, etc.)
  • Requests are reviewed twice a week during the fall and spring terms, and once a week during the winter and summer sessions.  All efforts will be made to review requests in a timely manner. During busy times of the year, it may take up to 15 business days to receive a decision.
  • If additional information is needed to make a decision, students are contacted via email to provide more details.
  • Decisions are emailed to students from the Wufoo system and a note is placed in TerpEngage.
