Hello Fellow CMSE Alumni,

The 2nd Annual CMSE Alumni 5K Fun Run is approaching us fast as it will take place on Sunday, May 1st, 2022 via the JustMove App.

The Annual CMSE Alumni 5K Fun Run, is a virtual Fun Run hosted on the first Sunday of May, where participants run or walk at least 3.1 Miles and raise funds through donations for the CMSE Department at the University of Maryland. In light of the Covid-19 Pandemic and the lockdowns, the CMSE department has faced budget cuts. This event is solely to help fund the Center, so it can continue running, and help many minority students who are in need. Last year we raised over $27,000 for the Center and this year our goal is to raise $50,000 with your help. All donations and proceeds will go directly to the CMSE department.

In order to prepare ourselves for this event, it is important to register. Please register on the website first to obtain a special code that you can input into the JustMove App to join the race. It is better to get this done sooner than later so you will be able to participate!

2021 INAUGURAL ALUMNI 5K FUN RUN

Calling all CMSE Alumni, family and friends! Mark your calendars for the 2nd Annual CMSE Alumni 5K Fun Run scheduled for Sunday, May 1, 2022. Together, we can create the path forward for the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering and promote diversity in STEM education and careers.

Last spring, CMSE alumni and friends from across the country signed up to participate and asked their networks to sponsor their efforts, with funding going to support the Center. Their efforts were a success: the 35 participants raised more than $27,000 for CMSE’s programs for underrepresented engineering students at the University of Maryland.

The CMSE Alumni 5k Fun Run was launched by CMSE alumnus Edwin Surprin (’97 BS mechanical engineering) in partnership with his fellow alumni “After talking with Ms. Parker and Ms. Kamalidiin , it was clear that alumni had to come together and raise funds to help the Center keep helping students,” he said. As an avid runner, he proposed a virtual 5K (3.1 miles) using Just Move, an app that brings alumni and friends together to participate virtually.

For the May 2022 event, the fun run planning committee’s goal is to recruit more participants and raise more funds through expanded marketing and community partnerships. Proceeds from the CMSE Alumni 5k Fun Run will make a great impact as the Center works to meet the ever-expanding needs of a growing number of underrepresented students. As a runner or committee member, you can help ensure that students find community and support at CMSE. To learn more about how you can help CMSE as a runner or on the fun run planning committee, email CMSEAlumniFunRun@gmail.com.

Great thanks to the 2021 CMSE Alumni 5K Fun Run Planning Committee: Edwin Surprin ’97, Chair; Promotions Committee: Monica Watkins ‘94, Hallie Williams ‘95, Nicole Smith ’98, Jack Goode ‘96, Ayo Osho ‘07, Jimmy Newton ‘93; Marketing/PR Committee: Tima McGuthry-Banks ’92, Brian Smith ’95, Marc Butler ’93, Karen Dulysse ‘93, Renee Reynolds ’00, Brian Hayes ’07. Special thanks to Tamika Hodnett, Assistant Director, Corporate and Foundation Relations-A. James Clark School of Engineering and Gertie Williams, CMSE Event Manager for their support and assistance.

JOIN US - 2ND ANNUAL VIRTUAL CMSE ALUMNI 5K FUN RUN

Hello Fellow CMSE Alumni,

It’s the time of year again to get ourselves registered for the 2nd Annual Virtual CMSE Alumni 5K Fun Run to be held Sunday, May 1, 2022. We had a very successful first year in which we raised over $27,000 for the Center and this year our goal is to raise $50,000 with the help of your participation and/or donations. We were able to raise that amount with only 32 runners participating in the Fun Run, so this year our goal is to double the number of runners as well as solicit the help of any corporate and/or small businesses you are affiliated with. If we can do that, we have no doubt that we can meet and even exceed our goal.

Here's what some of our Alumni who participated last year had to say:

Nicole S. - The 'Center' helped me find internships and scholarships allowing me to gain real world experience while pursuing my education. The Fun Run was an opportunity for me to incorporate fitness, fundraising and fun while supporting an organization that once supported me!!!

Matt G. - The CMSE Fun Run was a great opportunity to support CMSE while having fun and participating in a 5K run! It was easy to be a part of and I loved the ability to invite family and friends to support the cause. The chance to run a 5K from the comfort of my neighborhood was great!

Karen D. - I participated in the Fun Run to support CMSE’s fundraising efforts. They have helped me and other BES members tremendously. This was an opportunity to give back!

Tima M. - My support for CMSE began as soon as I graduated from UMCP, now UMD, in 1992. I enjoyed deciding how and where to support CMSE.

Once again, registration will be $40 and we're asking all participants to raise at least $250 towards the Center. Here is the link to register and/or donate to this fundraising effort: https://cmse-2022-5k.raisely.com

If you have any questions, please contact us at cmsealumnifunrun@gmail.com and we thank you for your consideration.

Thank you, CMSE Alumni Fun Run Planning Committee
