The employment landscape is uncertain even in the best of economic times, but we are currently facing an unprecedented cut to the federal workforce which disproportionately impacts the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.  Services like career counseling, job search workshops, career fairs, and networking opportunities will help you reach your career goals.

How can I have my resume critiqued?
It is always a good idea to have a career advisor review your resume before sharing it with an employer. A. James Clark School of Engineering students must have their resumes critiqued with Engineering Career Services before they can access job postings on the Handshake portal. Bring your printed resume in to get feedback from a peer or staff career advisor.

If my summer internship was canceled because of the government hiring freeze, or due to budget cuts should I still list it on my resume?
Yes, you should still list this information on your resume.  See an example at Sample Rescinded Offer SP25.

What can I do if I am not able to secure an internship for this summer?
Don't let the summer pass by without picking up new skills to make you a competitive candidate for co-ops, internships and entry-level positions.  Employers look for leadership, team, and interpersonal skills; campus or community involvement can demonstrate those skills.

Look for research positions, volunteer with a campus group, or collaborate with a student organization.  Brush up on your technical skills or achieve competency in a completely new area.

How do I schedule a virtual career advising appointment?
Advising with a Staff Member is available for:  interview preparation and mock interviews, in depth job search help CV and job search help for Ph.D. students, personal statements and evaluating job offers and salary negotiation.  You can easily schedule an appointment via Handshake; look under Career Center > Appointments > Engineering Career Services Appointments and select the topic & type of appointment you want.  Alternatively,  you can email us at careerengr@umd.edu (monitored M-F 8:30am-4:30pm). Please include the topics you would like to discuss, 2-3 times that you are available during the week, and your preference for a virtual or in-person appointment.

Do you have resources to help me with my job search?

Are you offering career development workshops?
We offer virtual workshops on a variety of topics from resumes and cover letters to interviews to salary negotiation to business etiquette to networking to social media.  All workshop dates are listed on Handshake under Events (Tip: check "Engineering Career Services" under More filters to narrow your results to workshops specifically offered by Engineering Career Services).

You may also watch recorded versions of our workshops on Handshake or on our website.

How can I schedule a mock interview?
We recommend doing an ENGR Interview Tips Workshop first, if time permits.  Schedule a Mock Interview via Handshake once you are ready (Tip:  Look under Career Center > Appointments > Engineering Career Services Appointments and select ENGR Mock Interview).

What is the Career Engineer newsletter?
We know that it can be overwhelming to keep track of so many career-related events while balancing classes, projects, and activities.  That’s why we email you a newsletter every Tuesday with all of our upcoming workshops, job deadlines, and employer sessions.  If you are not getting this email please let us know by emailing CareerEngr@umd.edu with the subject line “Add Me to CareerEngineer.”

How can I find out when the career fairs are taking place or when employers will host events?
In addition to reading the weekly Careeer Engineer newsletter,  engineering career fairs are listed on our Career Fairs webpage.  Be sure you've updated your resume and made it public on Handshake so that employer can access your information after the fairs.  Most employer events are listed on Handshake under Events (Tip:  enter "engr event" & check the box that populates under More filters to narrow your results to events that are related to engineering disciplines), but some may only be advertised through your department or via special outreach emails from Engineering Career Services staff, so make sure you read your messages.

Where else can I look for jobs?
There is no shortage of ways to search for a job on the web.  We have curated some External Job Boards you can explore in addition to Handshake.
