From entrepreneurial education, including a pioneering living-learning program, to personal mentoring and an on-campus incubator, Clark School and Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech) programs are national leaders in spurring technology-based entrepreneurship.
Startup Shell is a student-run incubator that provides a pipeline and network for student-run startups to scale out of the college campus. Since its inception, it has spurred over 60 ventures.
Mtech is a national leader in entrepreneurship, innovation education, and venture creation and is a pioneer in building successful university-company partnerships. An initiative of the Clark School, Mtech has built a comprehensive entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem at the University of Maryland. Its programs guide aspiring and existing entrepreneurs and arm top students from around the world with knowledge of how to successfully launch companies. At the heart of the first floor in A. James Clark Hall lies the Leidos Innovation Lab, supported by a donation from the Leidos Corporation. The lab provides 6,800 square feet of space for students to work together on cross-disciplinary research and designs, and features overhead utilities, digital displays and movable workbenches, creating an ideal environment for collaboration.

In 2013, the Sheik Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation (SZI) and the Clark School received a grant to form the Consortium. The grant brings together teams with excellence and expertise in delivering business, regulatory, legal, scientific, engineering, and clinical services for children. Several faculty researchers hold affiliations with both SZI and the Clark School, adding to the Consortium’s wealth of experience in pediatric device development.

Founded in 2014, the mission of Terrapin Works is to put additive manufacturing into the hands of undergraduate and graduate students alike while also supporting faculty and the greater UMD Community in innovative areas of research and product development. This 90% undergraduate student-run operation provides rapid prototyping, advanced manufacturing, and digital design resources as a service to the campus and surrounding community.
