Prof. Alireza Khaligh is the Director of the Maryland Power Electronics Laboratory (MPEL) at the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department and the Institute for Systems Research (ISR) in the University of Maryland. Prior to UMCP, he was an Assistant Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology, and also a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Grainger Center for Electric Machinery and Electromechanics in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
 
Prof. Khaligh’s major research interests include modeling, analysis, design, and control of power electronic converters. He is an author/co-author of more than 210 journal and conference papers as well as two books including Energy Harvesting: Solar, Wind, and Ocean Energy Conversion Systems (CRC Press, Dec. 2009), and Integrated Power Electronics Converters and Digital Control (CRC Press, May 2009).   
 
He is the recipient of various awards and recognitions including 2022 Vehicle and Transportation Systems Achivement Award  from IEEE Power Electronics Society, 6th Nagamori Award from Nagamori Foundation, the 2020 Jimmy Lin Award for Innovation from Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UMD, the 2019 Oustanding Systems Engineering Faculty Award from the Institute for Systems Research at UMD, the 2017 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from Illinois Institute of Technology, the 2016 E. Robert Kent Junior Faculty Teaching Award from Clark School of Engineering, the 2016 Junior Faculty Outstanding Research Award from Clark School of Engineering, the 2015 Junior Faculty Fellowship from the Institute for Systems Research at UMD, 2013 George Corcoran Memorial Award from the ECE Department at UMD, three Best Vehicular Electronics Awards from IEEE Vehicular Electronics Society (VTS), and 2010 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from Society of Automotive Engineers. 
 
Prof. Khaligh is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification. He was the Area Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (TVT), an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and an Associate Editor of IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics. Prof. Khaligh was a Guest Editor for the Special Section of IEEE TVT on Sustainable Transportation Systems, a Guest Associate Editor for the Special Issue of IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics on Transportation Electrification and Vehicle Systems, a Guest Editor for Special Section of IEEE TVT on Vehicular Energy Storage Systems and also a Guest Editor for Special Section of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics on Energy Harvesting. Prof. Khaligh is a member of the Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) University Resources. 
 
Prof. Khaligh was the General Chair of the 2016 IEEE Applied Power Electronic Conference and Expo (APEC), Long Beach, CA, the Global Premier Conference in Applied Power Electronics. Prof. Khaligh was also the General Chair of the 2013 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC), Dearborn, MI. He was the Assistant Program Chair of the 2013 IEEE Applied Power Electronic Conference and Expo (APEC), Fort Worth, TX. He was also the Program Chair of the 2011 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, Chicago, IL and the Program Co-Chair of the 2012 ITEC as well as the Grants and Awards Chair for the 2012-2013 APEC. Prof. Khaligh was a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society and also a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Industry Applications Society.
