Eric Tsao, Ph.D. Senior Director, Technical Operations
Dr. Eric Tsao joined the Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation in 2006 as Head of Technical Operations responsible for Process Development, Manufacturing, Quality, and Facility Engineering. Dr. Tsao has 20 years of direct experience with eight biotech facilities, 15 products in clinical development, and three FDA and EU approved products on the market. His areas of expertise include cell line development, medium development, bioreactor process design, protein purification, process scale-up, technology transfer, biotech facility engineering, validation, and cGMP manufacturing.
Prior to joining Aeras, Dr. Tsao served as a consultant in bioprocessing operations for various companies. At MedImmune, Dr. Tsao rose to the position of Vice President of Process and Manufacturing Sciences responsible for the development of cell culture and fermentation processes and the clinical production of monoclonal antibodies and recombinant vaccines. The development and manufacturing efforts led to the successful licensing of Synagis and FluMist. He was a process development scientist at Johnson & Johnson, where he focused on the development of cell culture processes and the start-up of a commercial-scale facility for erythropoietin (EPO). He also participated in the design and start-up of a cGMP multi-use facility for recombinant protein production. Dr. Tsao received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Tunghai University in Taiwan.
