Undergraduate Research Program
The Undergraduate Research Program broadens participation in STEM by connecting students with faculty to conduct original research, present their findings, and build professional skills. The program also prepares students for graduate school through workshops on applications, essays, funding, and more. Participants join a supportive learning community focused on academic, career, and leadership development.
Undergraduate Research ProgramWinter Student Leadership Retreat
The 20th Annual Winter Student Leadership Retreat will be held January 24–25, 2026. This in-person event helps engineering and computer science students strengthen their leadership, career, and professional skills while connecting with corporate partners and student leaders across the region. Workshops include interview prep, mock interviews, leadership development, and a corporate information fair.

The TLP Program at the University of Maryland supports 10–15 engineering students interested in technology careers by helping them accelerate their professional development, build community, and improve retention in tech pathways. Through workshops, mentorship, and networking with CMSE alumni and industry professionals, students gain guidance and hands-on experience. Program components and benefits are outlined below.
Technical & Leadership Preparedness ProgramResearch Symposium
Students in STEM across the University System of Maryland were invited to submit abstracts for the 2025 USM Research Symposium on February 15, 2025. The event features poster and oral presentations, networking with grad schools and research programs, and a Graduate School & Resource Fair.
Research SymposiumAnnual Student Recognition Ceremony
The 44th Annual Student Recognition Celebration was held on April 6, 2025, at the Riggs Alumni Center, hosted by CMSE, BES, SHPE, and the STEM community. This event honors the achievements, leadership, and excellence of our engineering students while recognizing the faculty, staff, families, and partners who support them. The celebration continues a long tradition of showcasing the best and brightest within our community.
Annual Student Recognition CeremonyInternship Program
The Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering (CMSE) offers paid nternships for undergraduate students to support pre-college camps and the pre-freshman program. Interns serve as mentors, instructors, and program assistants while gaining hands-on experience and professional development. Participants must attend training, meet program hour requirements, complete a final reflection, and join the closing presentation.
