Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that equips customers with critical innovations to stay ahead of emerging threats and disasters. Its diverse, global workforce of 114,000 people research, design, development, manufacture, integrate and sustain advanced technology systems, products, and services.

In 2019, Lockheed Martin committed $3 million to support several key projects at the Clark School of Engineering. Lockheed Martin is founding donor of the E.A. Fernandez IDEA Factory, including support for the Rotorcraft Lab which will support vertical takeoff and landing research. Lockheed Martin also supports the new hypersonic wind tunnel, which will host high-speed flight experiments up to Mach 8, or 5,930 mph. The company’s support also extends to the Clark School’s Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering and Women in Engineering Program that aims to boost the enrollment of women and underrepresented minorities in STEM disciplines

Lockheed Martin has partnered with the University of Maryland for more than six decades, with a presence on campus dating to 1944. Aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin, founder of the Martin Aircraft Company, was pivotal in the development of the University of Maryland aerospace engineering program and funded four buildings on campus including the Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel and Glenn L. Martin Hall. In 2010, the partnership evolved to include a formal collaboration agreement to leverage the resources, talent, and ideas of both institutions to produce innovative solutions for global and national security challenges in areas such as logistics and sustainment, climate change, and cyber-security.
