A Symbol of Potential

Engineering innovative solutions—from the world’s highest energy density thin-film battery to revolutionary suture-free wound repair—has been a hallmark of the A. James Clark School of Engineering throughout its 130-year history. Stanley R. Zupnik Hall will heighten that tradition as we educate future engineering leaders and pursue pioneering breakthroughs in infrastructure, transportation, environmental safety, and quantum technology. Resources available in Zupnik Hall will create a ripple of impact throughout the Clark School, the university, the state of Maryland, the region, and beyond.

Creating the Best Possible Solutions for Society

Engineering at Maryland magazine asked four of the Clark School faculty leaders who will innovate within the labs, classrooms, and collaborative spaces of Zupnik Hall to take us inside their processes, priorities, and plans for the future. Here’s how these civic-minded thinkers are using their prowess to build a better world—for everyone.

Building Better with Cyber Resilience

American trains are vulnerable to cyber breaches—that’s why the Clark School established the Digital and Cyber Railway Engineering and Operations Center (DCREOC).

Leading for Transportation

Engineering for the People

When university officials were first working to stay ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maryland engineers used an innovative method to predict the virus’s spread.

Far-Reaching Applications

A Responsibility to Make a Difference

City@UMD focuses on improving the city living experience through sustainable distributed systems and ecological system design to revolutionize the physical infrastructure in cities.

Systems with Context

To the Next Level

Quantum research at UMD could help create better biomedical diagnostics, assist with early-stage disease discovery and therapeutics, enable more energy-efficient batteries, and solve major optimization problems in manufacturing, healthcare, and other industries.

Unleash Our Quantum Potential

A Stunning Display of Engineering Know-How

In 2017, the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation’s unprecedented $219.4 million Building Together initiative, along with a $25 million commitment by Stanley R. Zupnik, made a historic investment in the University of Maryland to increase college access and affordability, inspire the next generation of engineering leaders, and spark innovations that tackle today’s most daunting problems. The Foundation’s investment will support the construction of Stanley R. Zupnik Hall, named for Clark School alum Stanley R. Zupnik ’59, a generous supporter of Maryland Engineering.
