Professor Mohammad Hafezi has been elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Prof. Hafezi was nominated for the honor by the society’s Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (DAMOP) for, “pioneering theoretical and experimental work in topological photonics and quantum synthetic matter.”

Hafezi is a Minta Martin Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a fellow of the Quantum Technology Center and Joint Quantum Institute, and a member of the Institute for Research in Electronics & Applied Physics. Hafezi's research aims to theoretically and experimentally investigate various quantum properties of light-matter interaction for applications in future optoelectronic devices, quantum information processing, and sensing. He earned his Ph.D. in 2009 from Harvard University and joined the UMD faculty in 2014. He received a Sloan Research Fellowship and Office of Naval Research Young Investigator award in 2015, and in 2020 was named a Simons Investigator of Physics by the New York-based Simons Foundation.

The APS Fellowship Program was created to recognize members who have made advances in physics through original research and publication, or made significant innovative contributions in the application of physics to science and technology. They may also have made significant contributions to the teaching of physics or service and participation in the activities of the Society.
