How would you describe the company culture? What was the most helpful thing your supervisor did to make you feel comfortable at the organization?  The company culture at Textron Systems was super supportive. My manager and I had weekly meetings to go over all of the projects that I was working on and answer any questions that I had about them. Often times these meetings ran late because my manager wanted to ensure that I had a solid grasp on whatever concept or procedure that was being discussed, which I very much appreciated.

Was there a formal program for all interns at the company? Was peer support available throughout the internship?  Yes, there was a formal program for all interns.  I was fortunate enough to have my internship be in-person (during COVID), so they set up several networking events as well as social events throughout the duration of the summer.  This made me much more comfortable and willing to reach out to other peers for support.

What have been the most interesting aspects of your internship?    The most interesting aspect of my internship was seeing how I was able to apply my mechanical engineering background to a quality engineering role.  It made it easier to interface with other quality and manufacturing engineers, as well as interpret drawings.

What advice would you give other UMD engineering students seeking an internship or co-op position?    Don't be afraid to try something new!  Internships are a great way to gain experience and ultimately find a role that best suits your skills and career interests.  In doing so, you will be better prepared for when you start searching for a full-time job upon graduation!
