I say if you really want an internship, you can get it. So, put your mind to it, go to the career fairs (when you can) and do your best.
Name: Uche Onwubalili (Cohort 6)
Major: Civil and Environmental Engineering
Give a brief description of the experience.
During the summer of 2024, I was a Project Engineer Intern for Coakley & Williams Construction. I worked on site at the new development of Prince George’s County’s Special Ops Division in Upper Marlboro, MD.
What was the most impactful part of the experience?
I enjoyed being able to work in my local community. I learned a lot in regards to the construction industry. I learned the construction process and the different pieces that fit into it. I would like to say that I was everyone’s intern; so I was able to also learn what superintendents do and what safety engineers do as well.
What surprised you?
I was surprised by all the seemingly small components that go into closing out a project. You have to have as-built manuals of basically everything. You have to make sure you get all supporting documents on time. It was interesting to do and learn.
Did you make any personal and/or professional connections with peers?
I made a connection with my fellow intern, Cameron. I saw him on a daily basis, so naturally we became friends.
What were your major takeaways? What did you learn?
I learned that I do truly want to work in construction. I also learned what it means to have a good routine. I have now been able to carry a healthy routine into this semester because of my work experience.
How have your career or academic goals changed or evolved as a result of this experience?
Now that I know the different fields of construction, I have more to think about within the next few years. Do I want to work on site every day or do I want to have the flexibility of working from home some days if I wanted to? These are some things I have to think about for the future.
