"Becoming Interdisciplinary: Making Citizens and Innovating Research"
Jamie Cohen-Cole, Dept. of American Studies, George Washington University
The push toward interdisciplinarity offers today's academics, students and institutions the same virtues offered by earlier, similar initiatives. In the 1950s, interdisciplinarity signaled an open-minded, creative and practical orientation. The label communicated a vision of self, society and politics that advocates promoted as useful and modern. This was true in the social sciences, which this paper and presentation will discuss. The paper under discussion is an extract from the book project, The Open Mind: Cold War Politics and the Sciences of Human Nature.
Please email Betsy Mendelsohn to request a copy of Dr. Cohen-Cole's paper in advance or to join the MCHOTSE mailing list. Refreshments at 4:00pm. After a brief presentation, we will enjoy an hour of discussion with the author.
MCHOTSE is the Maryland Colloquium on the History of Technology, Science and Environment; during 2012-2013, it is supported by the Dept. of History, the Miller Center for Historical Studies, and the Science Technology & Society programs.
