Liu Named Yurie Kim Eminent ProfessorProfessor K. J. Ray Liu of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been appointed Christine Yurie Kim Eminent Professor of Information Technology at the Clark School. Liu was selected for the Kim professorship in recognition of his sustained and influential scientific and scholarly work in the area of signal processing and communications.
Funds from the Christine Yurie Kim endowment will further support Liu's research and education programs. The five-year, renewable appointment began in January 2011.
"This appointment provides further recognition of Professor Liu's outstanding contributions as a scholar and researcher," said Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Chair Patrick O'Shea. "We are delighted to have him selected for this honor."
Liu was named a Distinguished Scholar-Teacher of the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2007. He serves as Associate Chair of Graduate Studies and Research of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and leads the Maryland Signals and Information Group conducting research encompassing broad aspects of wireless communications and networking, information forensics and security, multimedia signal processing, and biomedical engineering.
Liu is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award and Distinguished Lecturer, as well as various best paper awards from IEEE and EURASIP. He also received various teaching and research recognitions from the University of Maryland including the university-level Invention of the Year Award; and Poole and Kent Senior Faculty Teaching Award and Outstanding Faculty Research Award, both from the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
An ISI Highly Cited Author in Computer Science, Liu is a Fellow of IEEE and AAAS. Liu is president-elect and was vice president of publications for the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He was the editor-in-chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine and the founding editor-in-chief of EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing.
