Dr. Nguyen is a Principal Lecturer at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park.
He is a founding member of the Environmental and Socially Responsible Engineering (ESRE) group who work to weave conscientious engineering throughout the undergraduate educational experience. His work in ESRE has included the development of social and environmental content for courses, faculty instructional training, and the introduction of impact-driven project-based learning experiences for undergraduates.
He currently leads a multi-disciplinary course, Entrepreneurial Design Realization, that is solely dedicated to undergraduates generating products of positive impact that go out into the public domain.
Additional contributions include formally integrating sustainability design requirements into capstone projects, introducing non-profit partnerships related to designs for persons with disabilities, and founding the capstone Social/Environmental Design Impact Award.
Dr. Nguyen manages several outreach efforts including the large-scale Get Out And Learn (GOAL) engineering kit program, an initiative that he co-founded during the pandemic. GOAL programming now reaches thousands of local K-12 students each year and includes large-scale on-campus events attracting upwards of 600 participants at a time.
In growing GOAL, he established robust and flourishing partnerships with local school districts that go beyond just the wide-scale distribution and implementation. Teachers and undergraduates collaborate in the design, development, and testing of hardware and curriculum.
