iSTEM Practitioner Program

Inside the EA Fernandez IDEA Factory

Build a Neuroinclusive Classroom on Your Own Schedule

Engineering needs people who approach complex problems differently. Students navigating ADHD or executive function challenges often bring exceptional creativity and persistence to the discipline. How we design our courses can open doors for these thinkers or quietly close them.

The iSTEM Practitioner Program empowers faculty at the A. James Clark School of Engineering to bring neuroinclusive teaching into their courses through small, targeted adjustments.

About iSTEM@UMD

iSTEM@UMD is a partnership between Maryland Engineering, the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, and the Provost's Office designed to inspire passion and enhance the success of unconventional engineering learners.

iSTEM@UMD

Designed for flexibility, this self-paced professional development path delivers high-impact strategies that result in more engaged students, streamlined course logistics, and learning environments that work better for everyone.

  • Open Enrollment: Rolling registration through May 2027

Curriculum Structure

To earn the iSTEM Practitioner credential and stipend, complete three core foundational learning modules and submit one applied teaching artifact.

  1. Core Learning Modules
The core modules can be completed in any order via online self-paced courses or by attending equivalent live Teaching & Learning Transformation Center (TLTC) workshops:
    • Supporting Neurodiverse Learners: Gain valuable insights about neurodiverse learners and take a strengths-based approach to teaching and learning. Explore practical techniques to enhance your teaching practice and foster a more inclusive classroom.
    • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Basics: Learn about the UDL framework as a way for instructors to meet the needs of all students. Consider different strategies for creating a more motivating and equitable learning environment.
    • Active Learning Fundamentals: Explore theories of motivation and research-backed active learning strategies to increase student engagement, participation, comprehension, and academic success.
  2. Theory to Practice
Applying iSTEM Principles: Apply what you have learned directly to a course you teach. You will submit a teaching artifact (such as a redesigned syllabus, accessible assignment, or scaffolding tool) along with a short reflective summary.

Why Join the iSTEM Practitioner Program?

  • Maximum Flexibility: Complete modules whenever and wherever it fits your academic schedule.
  • Immediate Class Impact: Start small with one assignment, one session, or one communication tweak to see immediate student engagement gains.
  • Institutional Recognition: Enhance your promotion and teaching dossier with an official UMD iSTEM meta-credential.
