Degree Programs

University of Maryland students studying at the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM) campus enroll in either our Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree program.

The Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs at USMSM offer the same exceptional high impact curriculum (with a few electives unique to USMSM) as those at the main campus in College Park—delivered right here in Southern Maryland.

The bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering degree programs at the University of Maryland are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission(s) of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Electrical, Mechanical, and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.

Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering

I decided to study mechanical engineering at USMSM due to the direct connection with working engineers. The professors I had helped strengthen my ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. With the connection to NAWCAD I was excited about the tremendous value in having the ability to attend classes and complete internships simultaneously. The smaller class sizes allowed me to ask detailed questions and engage with the teacher in conversations about academia and industry topics.

Transfer to UMD

Our 2-year degree programs are designed for students who have completed all of their lower level major and General Education requirements from a community college or other institution, then transfer to the University of Maryland (UMD) at the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM) campus to complete their junior and senior year.

Transfer Advising & Admissions How to Apply Tuition & Scholarships

Prospective Clark School students need to be admitted to the University of Maryland and meet the following Clark School requirements:

  • 3.0 GPA

    Students must have a GPA of at least 3.0 from college credits earned at all previously attended institutions.
  • College Courses

    Students are required to complete the gateway requirements:
    • Calculus II (MATH 141) with a minimum grade of B- or better;
    • Calculus-Based Physics I (PHYS 161) with a minimum grade of B- or better;
    • Chemistry for Engineers (CHEM 135) or General Chemistry II (CHEM 271) or CHEM 131 + 134 with a minimum grade of C- or better.

Learn more about the Clark School gateway requirements on the Transfer to Maryland Engineering website.

Please note that completion of the gateway requirements does not guarantee completion of the degree within 2 years. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to ensure that they are on track to meet all degree requirements.

  Fall Admission Spring Admission
Early Action March 1st August 1st
Regular Decision June 1st November 15th

  • Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. When more than one course can satisfy a gateway requirement, taking a second course from the list will count as a repeat. (Please note that a grade of "W" is considered an attempt and must be repeated).
  • Currently UMD students may apply only once to an LEP. (Note: The external transfer student application will not count as an attempt.)
  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 after admission to an LEP. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the major.

A Seamless Pathway from Education to Career

Southern Maryland Engineering Parnership (SMEP)

Students may transfer to the Clark School at the University System of Maryland at Southern Maryland (USMSM) campus from any accredited Maryland public community college or 4-year institution.

Students enrolled specifically in the Southern Maryland Engineering Partnership program have the unique opportunity to begin their studies at College of Southern Maryland (CSM), then later apply to transfer to the University of Maryland (UMD) at USMSM in Southern Maryland to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. While enrolled at UMD, students have the option to apply for internship opportunities with the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) in Patuxent River, MD. Internship opportunities may lead to full-time employment with NAWCAD upon graduation from UMD and completion of NAWCAD program requirements.
