Nate Herb
A good combination of a reasonable commute, campus resources, the transfer program with CSM, and the more tight-knit community [were the reasons I chose Engineering at USMSM].

Name: Nate Herb
Major: Mechanical Engineering

Current Career Plans:

My current career plans are undecided, but I would most like to go into the aerospace field.

Through a connection with one of my professors at USMSM, I was able to secure a summer internship at USMSM's MATRIX Lab, where I brought my own project.

I worked on the development of the ADD (Autonomous Damage Detector), which utilized radar to find internal defects in wood structures.

Challenges faced and How You Over Came Them:

Unfortunately, not all of the classes are fully taught at USMSM, but rather are to some degree streamed from a class at College Park. In such cases, proper communication with the professor very difficult, as it is either second hand or our questions can get drowned out. While this challenge wasn't fully overcome, mutual support from fellow classmates got us through the worst of it.

I think the most valuable part of the USMSM experience is that the much smaller relative scale to College Park allows for a much greater degree of individual attention for each student.

I am much more readily able to communicate with both the staff and the professors for any support that I need.

The most important piece of advice I would give is to stay connected with your fellow students.

With such a small amount of students in the building, it's very easy to feel isolated. Having a network with the other students is vital both for solidarity & academic support.
