SPICE Summer Program (Students with Potential and Interest, Considering Engineering) is a week-long commuter program designed for young women who will be entering the 9th and 10th grade. The program is geared towards women who would like to learn more about engineering disciplines, opportunities, and careers. Throughout the course of the week, students are introduced to the field of engineering through projects, tours, and guest speakers. Each activity is intended to highlight the relevance of engineering in daily life and showcase how engineering improves society. All activities will be supervised by current engineering students and conducted in a safe learning environment at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Note: This is NOT a college credit-bearing program. It is meant to introduce students to the different disciplines and societal impacts of engineering. Its mission is also to strengthen confidence and foster community among women who aspire to study engineering.
New this year, we've formed a partnership with GE Girls (an effort from General Electric) and WSSC (Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission). Highlights of this year's program include:
Field trip WSSC Water Treatment Facilities where participants will engage with professional engineers and learn about alternative sources of energy (among other information!)
Day on Capitol Hill where participants will hear from and speak with staffers about girls in STEM and also the intersection of engineering and policy
