Dr. Sukrut Prashant Phansalkar Appointed Assistant Research Professor at UMD

Dr. Sukrut Prashant Phansalkar has been appointed Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, effective September 21, 2026. The appointment was announced by Prof. Bongtae Han, Keystone Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Optomechanics and Micro/Nano Semiconductor/Photonics Systems (LOMSS), and Prof. F. Patrick McCluskey, Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Phansalkar has been associated with the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) and the LOMSS Lab, where he conducted his doctoral and postdoctoral research under the guidance of Prof. Bongtae Han. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2024.

His research focuses on the mechanical characterization and numerical modeling of polymers used in advanced semiconductor packaging, including cure-dependent material behavior, process-induced residual stresses, and warpage prediction. His work has contributed to research collaborations with the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and industry partners. His work in this area is also featured in the LOMSS research program on advanced characterization of semiconductor packaging materials.

Dr. Phansalkar has authored and co-authored numerous journal articles and conference papers in electronics packaging and materials characterization. His recognitions include the 2024 ECTC Student Travel Award, the Irwin Centennial Research Award, the Jacob K. Goldhaber Travel Grant, and the Dean's Research Fellowships.

In his new role, Dr. Phansalkar will continue his research activities in the LOMSS Lab under Prof. Han's leadership, contributing to research on semiconductor packaging materials, advanced characterization methods, and predictive modeling. He will also participate in graduate-level teaching and mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers.
