Clark School Opens Search for Dean

The University of Maryland invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

The University of Maryland, College Park, is a comprehensive Carnegie 1, public university with almost 35,000 students in baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral programs. It is located on a 350 acre campus just outside Washington, DC. The A. James Clark School of Engineering is one of the largest units of the university and is composed of the Departments of Aerospace Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. The Institute for Systems Research, Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics, Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute, Maryland NanoCenter, and University of Maryland Energy Research Center are five additional major research and academic units. The School also supports an array of continuing education programs and distance learning programs. Through a highly successful Technology Advancement Program and a number of other activities, the School maintains an active outreach program with local industry. The Dean has responsibility for approximately 200 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty, 2,500 undergraduate students, 1,600 graduate students, and an annual state budget of approximately $40 million. The School has experienced substantial growth in research productivity and currently conducts a thriving and diversified program which exceeds $110 million per year. The School operates in 14 buildings and specialized facilities, the newest of which is the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building, a cross-disciplinary facility with state-of-the-art computational and experimental laboratories for research training and learning. The Clark School has a rising reputation for excellence, and strong support from alumni and friends. U.S. News and World Report ranked the School’s graduate program 37th in 1993 and 16th in 2008 and is the top public graduate engineering program in the Mid-Atlantic area. In 2007, the Princeton Review ranked the Clark School 6th among graduate engineering programs and The Institute of Higher Education and Center for World - Class Universities ranked the Clark School 13th in the world among all engineering programs. In fewer than three years of a seven-year fundraising campaign, the School has obtained $110 million of its $185 million goal.

The Dean is expected to provide innovative leadership to build upon the outstanding research, educational and entrepreneurial activities within the School. The primary responsibilities of the position include academic leadership, fund raising, maintaining and enhancing relations with alumni and government and industrial partners, and administrative oversight and direction. Candidates should have qualifications for a tenured full professorship in one of the School's departments, a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service, demonstrated administrative ability, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The Dean reports directly to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the chief academic officer for the University. Additional information about the A.
