IMAPS Chesapeake and UMD Student Chapter Meeting
Thursday, April 23, 2026
3:00 p.m.
2164 Martin Hall, University of Maryland

The Chesapeake Chapter of IMAPS is made up of IMAPS members from the US capital area of Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware. The Chesapeake Chapter works closely with the University of Maryland and defense-related technology organizations headquartered in the region.
This in-person chapter meeting begins with a welcome from Prof. Patrick McCluskey, an IMAPS Fellow and the Interim Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland. This is followed by an introduction from leadership of both the local IMAPS chapter and the UMD student chapter, who would outline the program and set the stage for the afternoon’s activities.
The event also features technical presentations from distinguished experts. Prof. Damena Agonafer, an Associate Professor and Clark Faculty Fellow at the University of Maryland, will present his research on direct-to-chip evaporative cooling techniques using hollow micropillar membranes for data center hardware. He is joined by David Shahin, the Advanced Packaging Leader for the Northrop Grumman Microelectronics Center, who will deliver a technical presentation focused on industry developments.
Following the lectures, the spotlight shifts to the next generation of engineers with a 3-Minute Thesis segment, where students are challenged to summarize their complex research in a brief, high-impact format. The gathering concludes with a formal IMAPS business meeting, offering a forum for organizational updates and networking.
