What have been the most interesting aspects of your internship? The most interesting part was owning a real security project end-to-end. My project focused on assessing the security of internal servers. It had three phases: first learning the fundamentals, then manually performing security assessments on several internal servers, and finally building an AI-powered agent to automate parts of the assessment process.
What campus activities or courses do you think helped you, or would have helped you, with this internship? Courses in Pentesting, Network Security, and Cloud Security were the most directly useful.
Was there diversity among your colleagues within the department and throughout your internship/co-op experience? Yes — my team and the broader security org included people from a wide range of national, educational, and career backgrounds, including engineers who came into security from non-traditional paths. The intern cohort itself was also diverse, coming from schools all over the country and internationally.
How have your career or academic goals changed as a result of this internship experience? Before this internship I was newer to offensive security, and it confirmed I want to pursue security engineering as a career — specifically the emerging area of AI security, both securing AI systems and using AI to automate security work. Academically, I now plan to prioritize coursework in offensive security, since the most interesting problems I worked on sat at the intersection of these.
