Erin Wernick holding an "I love power tools" sign
I learned of this internship through the Fall Career Fair. I spoke to one of their recruiters, and received an email about applying to their internship program a few weeks later!
Name:  Erin Wernick
Major:  Materials Science Engineering
Employer:  Stanley Black & Decker
Location: Towson, MD

How did you find the internship/co-op?  I learned of this internship through the Fall Career Fair.  I spoke to one of their recruiters, and received an email about applying to their internship program a few weeks later!

What have been the most interesting aspects of your internship?  I learned more about product development by seeing how different roles coordinate together. I got to work alongside those in marketing, finance, and supply chain seeing the various facets included in engineering a new idea.

How would you describe the company culture? What was the most helpful thing your supervisor did to make you feel comfortable at the organization?  I loved the company culture at Stanley Black & Decker! Everyone was so friendly and helpful, and I could tell that the employees truly enjoyed working there. My manager checked in on me at least once a week to discuss my project and how I was adjusting to the company - he really went out of his way to help me with whatever I needed.

Was there a formal program for all interns at the company? Was peer support available throughout the internship?  Stanley Black & Decker has a large internship program with a little over 80 interns at the Towson location. While everyone is assigned to their own manager and project, there is also an intern challenge where we are put on teams with the other interns (marketing, finance, engineering, supply chain) to come up with our own project. It was a great way to meet the other interns and learn about the cross-functionality of product development - something students don't always receive at school. There were also multiple workshops on professional development, ensuring we got the most out of our time at the company.

How have your career or academic goals changed as a result of this internship experience?  This internship has given me a more clear idea of what I want to do (and enjoy) once I graduate. I can envision myself in various roles, and I am more aware of the specific type of tasks I would be doing.
