How did you find the internship/co-op? What was the interview process like? This experience was very rewarding. I enjoyed being able to teach students about computing while also seeing their confidence, creativity, and overall interest grow throughout the program. For me, the interview process was a behavioral interview with the program managers.
What have been the most interesting aspects of your internship? One of the most interesting aspects of this job was seeing how the personalities of the kids we taught unfolded over the couple 2 week sessions we held. Over time, we noticed how open they were to asking questions and working with each other when at the beginning they were more reserved. Because of this they were able to build projects using microbits and block coding, as well as Python and machine learning.
Was there diversity among your colleagues within the department and throughout your internship/co-op experience? Yes, there was a lot of diversity. Among us four instructors, three were females and all four of us are people of color. This was refreshing for me to see as the number of women in my tech classes is falling dramatically. And as for the kids, this is inspiring because it shows that people who look like them can become a leader in the tech industry.
Comments/Questions: I was a Computing Instructor and Program Assistant for the CompSci Connect, TRAILS AI, and TechStart Camps. The students I taught were middle schoolers, high schoolers, and incoming freshmen, respectively.
