Tom Scholl
Tom Scholl has been involved in the creation of over 60 start-ups in different roles including founder, chairman, CEO, board member, and investor. In 1990, Tom founded his first company, Telogy Networks. Before Telogy, Tom was Senior Vice President of Engineering at Hughes Network Systems (now a subsidiary of EchoStar).
Tom serves on the Clark School’s Board of Visitors (BOV) and was one of its longest-serving chairs under three different Engineering Deans. He received the Clark School’s inaugural Glenn L. Martin Medal in 2014. Tom was also a long-time trustee of the University of Maryland Foundation.
Tom is a graduate of Purdue University in Philosophy and Literature, and currently serves as chairman of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the College of Liberal Arts. He received Purdue’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009 and the Doctor of Letters degree honoris causa in 2014.
Tom is married to Susan Hitz Scholl and has two sons, William and Tommy. He has been writing poetry since he was sixteen.
Susan Hitz Scholl '73
Susan Hitz Scholl is a 1973 graduate of UMD, College Park and holds a B.A. in Advertising and Applied Design.
After graduation, Susan established her career as a production manager and art director for various graphic design studios in Alexandria, VA. Upon moving to Gaithersburg, MD, she took the position as creative director for Fleet Street Publishing Co. As a member of the Art Director’s Club of Metropolitan Washington, Susan won awards for print publication and advertising design.
Susan now lives in Bethesda, MD with her husband Tom. They have 2 sons, William and Tommy. William graduated from Capitol Technology University with a B.S. in Cybersecurity; Tommy graduated from UMD with a B.A. in Spanish Literature and Global Public Health.
Susan is Secretary and Director of the Tom and Susan Scholl Family Foundation.
The Susan Hitz Scholl ’73 Endowed Scholarship awards an annual scholarship to an undergraduate enrolled in the Clark School of Engineering.
