Md Nasim Mia Receives Graduate Endowed Fellowship

Md Nasim Mia’s research focuses on developing high-efficiency heat pumps. Here he calibrates the thermocouples used for evaluating an R-290 heat pump experimental system to ensure accurate temperature measurements for evaluating heat transfer, heating/cooling capacity and overall performance.

Congratulations to Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE) graduate research assistant Md Nasim Mia on receiving the Dr. Reinhard Radermacher Distinguished Graduate Endowed Fellowship for Energy Innovation in Mechanical Engineering for 2026–27. Awarded annually, the fellowship supports one CEEE graduate student for an academic year.

Mia is a second-year Ph.D. student in mechanical engineering, whose research focuses on developing high-efficiency heat pump and refrigeration technologies that offer low global warming potential. His work emphasizes R-290 (propane) heat pump systems, low-refrigerant-charge system design, vapor injection, secondary-loop systems and advanced heat exchanger technologies. He combines thermodynamic modeling, system optimization and experimental development to improve heat pump efficiency and performance, particularly under challenging operating conditions, such as extremely low ambient temperatures during cold-climate heating and high thermal loads during peak cooling conditions. Mia is an active member of the University of Maryland Student Branch of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Before joining CEEE, Mia worked as a lecturer at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology in Bangladesh. He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. After completing his Ph.D., he hopes to pursue a career in industry, contributing to the research and development of sustainable, energy-efficient heating, cooling and refrigeration technologies and helping translate advanced research into practical, real-world solutions.

Former CEEE Director Reinhard Radermacher (1952–2025) established the fellowship program in 2018 to support students who are committed to innovating sustainable heating and cooling solutions.
