ABSTRACT: Helicopters are incredibly useful machines, both for military and civilian use. Unfortunately they are typically slow and expensive to operate. If you’ve followed helicopter development, you’ve probably seen the progress Sikorsky has in developing platforms that retain the great characteristics of a helicopter, while increasing their speed. However, you’ve likely not seen the advancements that are quietly being made to drastically reduce the cost of operating a helicopter, leveraging data, digital twins, prognostics and analytics that Sikorsky has been maturing for decades.
In this presentation, we will provide some insight into how Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin are using the digital thread to revolutionize helicopter sustainment, improve access to maintenance data, and improve training. We will also touch upon the interesting aspects of how autonomy can help improve life cycle costs.
BIO: Simon Gharibian is the Director of Global Sustainment Centers of Excellence within the Rotary and Mission Systems (RMS) business unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation. He is responsible for all functional resources within the Global Sustainment organization, supporting the entire spectrum of RMS products, from Littoral Combat Ships to Sikorsky Helicopters. Prior to this role, he was director of Fleet Management, Supportability and Training for Sikorsky’s sustainment organization. In that role he was responsible for Sikorsky’s commercial Customer Care Center, which provides 24/7 aircraft-on-ground support, and leverages data analytics and maintenance prognostics to increase the overall availability of Sikorsky helicopter models. Simon’s responsibilities also included the development and support of pilot and maintainer technical manuals, as well as the creation and delivery of aircrew and maintenance training worldwide for all Sikorsky products.
Since joining Sikorsky in 1999, Simon has held increasing levels of responsibility in engineering, innovation and business development. Notably, Simon was responsible for the Intelligence pillar of Sikorsky Innovations, which sought to merge elements such as active control systems and advanced anomaly detection to increase the value proposition of Sikorsky products.
Simon holds a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, both from Syracuse University.
