M-Power Tools Summer Program | A. James Clark School of Engineering, University of Maryland

Program Overview

For rising 7th and 8th graders

The M-Power Tools Summer Program is focused on enhancing self-efficacy and teamwork skills in middle school-aged girls by teaching them to use power tools safely and effectively to accomplish a project goal. The week-long, commuter summer program aims to strengthen participants’ sense of confidence and ability, and it also exposes participants to the field of engineering in the hopes of inspiring their career aspirations. Additionally, this summer program will provide girls the opportunity to engage with current engineering students, specifically women, and professionals in the field who can serve as role models and mentors.

Goals of M-Power Tools

  • Enhance self-efficacy through building independence and confidence.
  • Strengthen teamwork skills.
  • Build enthusiasm in the possibility of pursuing a career in engineering.
  • Provide mentorship and role models to participants who are interested in STEM career fields.

M-Power Tools Curriculum

Participants in M-Power Tools will gain hands-on experience using power tools in a University of Maryland machine shop to build structures that they have designed.  After learning tool safety and rules of operation, participants will individually build a small project that they will be able to take home with them at the end of the session. Upon completion of their small, individual project, participants will work collaboratively to design and build a group project which they will present on the last day of the program. Undergraduate engineering students will serve as summer program interns and provide support, guidance, and encouragement in an effort to help participants have an enriching experience.  They will also serve as mentors and role models to the middle school-aged girls.

Please note that safety is our first priority and any behavior that puts our program participants, staff, or administration at risk will not be tolerated.
