The IMAPS Chesapeake Chapter and UMD Student Chapter Meeting at the University of Maryland

IMAPS Chesapeake Chapter kickoff meeting

The IMAPS Chesapeake Chapter and UMD Student Chapter held their kickoff meeting on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the University of Maryland. The event brought together members of the local industry and academic community from the Chesapeake region, including Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware, for an afternoon focused on microelectronics, advanced packaging, thermal management, reliability, and student research.

The meeting opened with remarks from Prof. Patrick McCluskey, IMAPS Fellow and Interim Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, followed by an introduction from the IMAPS Chesapeake Chapter and UMD Student Chapter leaders. The program featured technical presentations from Prof. Damena Agonafer of the University of Maryland, who presented “Direct-to-Chip Evaporative Cooling with Hollow Micropillar Membrane for Data Center CPUs and GPUs,” and Dr. David Shahin of Northrop Grumman, who presented “Onshore Advanced Packaging at Northrop Grumman.”

IMAPS student presentation session The program also highlighted the work of University of Maryland graduate students through a 3-Minute Thesis session. Swarup Subudhi presented on additively manufacturing high-density circuits for space applications; Jonathan Martin presented on harmonic vibration fatigue life of low-temperature solder interconnects in printed board assemblies; Clifton Buxbaum presented on low-temperature metallization of ceramic substrates for high-temperature and power electronics; Roshith Mittakolu presented on turning waste heat into revenue through cooling AI factories and heating cities; Md Asif Faisal Beg presented on high-temperature interconnects for extreme environments using transient liquid phase sintering; and Aniket Ajitkumar Bharamgonda presented on microstructure-sensitive multiscale analysis of SAC305 solder interconnects.

Together, the presentations and discussions underscored the IMAPS Chesapeake Chapter’s role in bringing together students, faculty, and industry leaders across the regional microelectronics community.
