Name:  Alison Kriz
Major:  Materials Science
Company:   Parsons/Fourth Dimension Engineering
Location:  Columbia, MD

What was the work like?  I worked alongside both mechanical and materials engineers on the printed electronics team, a group responsible for designing, fabricating, and repairing 3D-printed microelectronic devices.

What skills were most important for this internship?  Through this project, I learned valuable laboratory skills related to printing, sintering, and characterizing samples, as well as professional skills important in the scientific community such as researching, presenting my results, and writing technical reports.   The most valuable skill I gained from this project was independence because although I received help and guidance from my team members, I was personally responsible for executing my plan and reporting results.

What did you like best about the experience?  The most important experience I gained from this internship came from working on a team of fellow engineers who valued my input and helped me to grow as a professional in the field. During team meetings, I was encouraged to offer my opinion on other projects and discuss ideas for future development.   The most exciting part of my internship was integrating and developing a process for a new lapping machine used for cross-section failure analysis.  This technology will have a lasting effect on the company because it provides the opportunity for high-quality analysis on failure mechanisms of devices, and I am proud to have contributed to the process.
