How has this experience enhanced your engineering education at Maryland? Throughout my research experience during the spring 2014 semester, I was given the opportunity to apply classroom taught knowledge to real-life situations and problems. I saw how theories discussed in class were implemented in the lab or outside in the field in order to complete each experiment or task. Because of this, my research experience has given me insight into how engineering and environmental knowledge are utilized by working professionals. It emphasizes the importance of fully participating and grasping the materials discussed in my engineering classes; motivating me to succeed. It was a riveting experience filled with the excitement of discovery and the possibility of benefiting many individuals worldwide.
What advice would you give other UMD engineering students seeking an internship, co-op or undergraduate research position? Do not let anyone deter you from applying to your desired internship or research experience. It is never too early to start searching and applying for the position you may want to have during the semester or summer. Additionally, make friends with your professors! They can be great networking prospects or point you in the direction of great opportunities.
How have your career or academic goals changed as a result of this experience? Honestly, I believe my research experience has only reinforced my desire to continue majoring in environmental engineering. It showed me that my work can provide simultaneously benefit the environment and individual communities.
