What motivated you to become a ClarkLEADER?
I was motivated to be a ClarkLEADER because I wanted to give back to the Clark School and be a part of the new students’ introduction to UMD’s wonderful engineering community. I remember how uncertain I felt as a freshman about what my time at UMD would look like, so if I can ease any student’s worries by answering their questions or sharing my experiences, I’d love to help. I hope every student exits the event feeling a little more at home at the Clark School and excited to take on the opportunities offered on campus.

What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new Maryland Engineering Students?
My advice is to take advantage of the fact that you’re new to the school by trying everything you’re interested in. As a freshman, you’re not expected to know exactly what you’re doing, so help your future self out by practicing some intimidating professional habits from the very beginning. Start applying to internships, go to career fairs, research labs that interest you, and make connections with your professors from the start. You’ll feel a lot more prepared and confident when doing these kinds of things is more expected of you.

What are some organizations or extracurricular activities you think new students should know about?
- Clark Ambassadors. You’ll be presenting information about the Clark School to incoming students and their families, which will consequently also teach you about all the opportunities available to you on campus.
- VIP (Vertically Integrated Projects). This program allows you to be involved with research early on in your undergrad and they have a lot of cool projects to choose from!
- Terrapin Works. You can work at an engineering related makerspace on campus, gaining technical experience while also getting paid :)
