Summer Programs Spark Young Minds: Elementary Students Explore Engineering

Two children from the Lego Robotics Program working on their project

In June 2023, two inspiring and innovative programs ignited the imaginations of elementary school children in our local community.

Rockets and Machine Magic! and Intro to Lego Robotics programs provided kindergarten through third grade learners with a unique opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students learned about problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking, all while having fun. Hands-on activities included designing machines and experimenting with robotics.

The summer programs also emphasized the importance of diversity in STEM fields. By engaging with underrepresented groups primarily from Prince George’s County, they helped break down barriers and inspire future engineers and scientists from all backgrounds.

At the end of each week, students showcased their projects and new knowledge to their families, educators, and community. The atmosphere was one of excitement and pride as the students demonstrated their innovative creations, and how everyone can pursue an engineering career.

The programs’ success have inspired optimism about the future of diversity in engineering. By introducing young students from underrepresented backgrounds to STEM at an early age, these programs are sowing the seeds for a more inclusive and creative workforce.
