What motivated you to become a ClarkLEADER?
Coming into UMD as a freshman was tough because there were so many people, clubs, and activities that it was hard to figure out where I fit in and how to meet new people. In Engineering especially, it felt difficult to find others who had the same interests as me. I want to become a ClarkLEADER because I know how much of a difference it makes to have someone point you in the right direction. I want to help people not only find opportunities that benefit them, but also make sure they’re having fun and really getting the most out of their time as undergrads. Being an engineering student isn’t easy since there is a lot to balance between classes, work, and a social life. But when you figure out that balance, it makes the whole college experience way better. As a ClarkLEADER, I want to help others find that balance early on so they can succeed in school while also building friendships and enjoying their time at UMD.
What is one piece of advice you would like to share with new Maryland Engineering Students?
I think people should explore the campus in as many ways as possible. Personally, I took the opportunity to explore all the different resources that helped make my experience the best it could be. I joined a few clubs, like SASE and Theta Tau, which connected me with people who share similar interests in engineering. They've supported me both socially and academically throughout my college journey. More than that, I think it's important to push yourself outside your comfort zone whether that's hanging out with new people or going on those spontaneous late-night adventures. Those little moments are what really shape your college experience. So overall, I encourage you all to explore what UMD has to offer, take advantage of every opportunity, and most importantly have fun with it!
What are some organizations or extracurricular activities you think new students should know about?
Theta Tau and Engineering Career Services (ECS).
