Being involved in extracurricular activities can help give you an idea of how the topics you learn in class are applied in the real world.
How did you find the internship/co-op? What was the interview process like? I found this internship after I attend a lecture as part of a requirement for one of my classes. I learned more about the company and their goals as well as what it was like to be a project engineer there. During the interview process, they also asked me about my career interests and which role did I see myself in, project or field engineer.
What campus activities or courses do you think helped you, or would have helped you, with this internship? I was a part of Concrete Canoe which allowed me to gain experience in reading construction drawings and drafting technical papers. During my internship, these two skills proved to be extremely helpful and I was able to understand the project quicker.
What advice would you give other UMD engineering students seeking an internship or co-op position? Being involved in extracurricular activities can help give you an idea of how the topics you learn in class are applied in the real world. Having this experience will help with any internship since your using your skills to accomplish a goal.
Was there a formal program for all interns at the company? Was peer support available throughout the internship? At Whiting-Turner, they have a complete and enriching internship program. Throughout the summer, they had many intern challenges and outings which allowed all of us to get to know each other better.
