How did you find the internship/co-op? What was the interview process like?  I found my internship through the Civil Suit up Event. The interview process involved a Teams meeting with the General Manager (Vice President) of the Rockville office. The interview lasted approximately one hour and provided an opportunity to discuss my background, experience, and alignment with the company’s goals.

What have been the most interesting aspects of your internship?   During my internship in land development, I had the opportunity to visit job sites and actively participate in on-site meetings. I was also involved in performing real-world calculations for CAD work, which provided valuable hands-on experience and deepened my understanding of practical applications in the field.

What campus activities or courses do you think helped you, or would have helped you, with this internship?  Courses such as Engineering for Sustainability, Fundamentals of Engineering Materials, and Civil Engineering Graphics for Design and Construction played a key role in equipping me for this internship. They offered essential knowledge in water treatment systems, sewer infrastructure, and the structural components of various facilities—all closely aligned with the tasks and responsibilities I handled during the internship.

How would you describe the company culture? What was the most helpful thing your supervisor did to make you feel comfortable at the organization?  The company culture at Soltesz is defined by its collaborative spirit, supportive atmosphere, and strong emphasis on professional development. Team members at all levels—from engineers to associates—are approachable and generous with their knowledge, fostering a workplace where continuous learning is actively encouraged. The team prioritizes both precision and efficiency, consistently delivering high-quality results while maintaining a strong sense of camaraderie.

One of the most impactful aspects of my internship was the guidance and support provided by my supervisor. They offered clear direction and took the time to thoroughly explain technical concepts, which helped build my confidence in performing my responsibilities. Their encouragement to ask questions and their constructive feedback made me feel both valued and empowered to grow. This open, mentorship-driven approach played a key role in my smooth integration into the team and overall success during the internship.

Was there diversity among your colleagues within the department and throughout your internship/co-op experience?  Yes, there was a clear sense of diversity among my colleagues, both within the department and throughout my internship experience. The team included individuals with varied educational backgrounds, cultural identities, and areas of professional expertise. This diversity contributed to a dynamic and inclusive work environment, where multiple perspectives enhanced collaboration, problem-solving, and decision-making—greatly enriching my overall learning experience.

Was there a formal program for all interns at the company? Was peer support available throughout the internship?  Soltesz offered a well-structured internship program that provided clear guidance on responsibilities, expectations, and opportunities for professional growth. The program featured comprehensive training sessions and regular check-ins with supervisors to track progress and ensure consistent support.

In addition to the formal structure, there was strong peer support throughout the internship. Colleagues were approachable and eager to help with any questions or challenges, fostering a collaborative and encouraging work environment. Interns also exchanged insights and experiences with one another, which promoted a sense of camaraderie and shared learning. This combination of structured guidance and peer collaboration made the internship both enriching and rewarding.

What advice would you give other UMD engineering students seeking an internship or co-op position?  My advice to UMD engineering students is to start early and make use of campus resources like career fairs, networking events, and faculty guidance. Customize your resume to highlight relevant skills and don’t hesitate to connect with alumni or professionals on LinkedIn for advice and opportunities. Be proactive during the application process and open to roles that challenge you. Once in an internship, take initiative, ask questions, and seek feedback—it’s a great chance to build both technical skills and professional relationships.
