Engineering Career Services (ECS) meets students where they are: in the classroom!
Here's are some classrooms in which you might find engineering career advisors. We highly encourage students who have not had an internship to consider taking EDCP108i, our internship search course.

EDCP108i Academic Transitions to Internships: ECS career advisors co-teach this 1-credit, asychronous, 7-week (half-semester) course recommended for students who have never had an internship and are actively searching for one. Students who have taken the course report greater confidence in the internship search process and have secured internships while in the course. Course modules take students through key exploratory and preparation activities, including:

  • Developing a resume and cover letter
  • Identifying potential internship sites and learning job search strategies
  • Introducing students to interviewing and networking skills
  • Learning effective communication skills for professional growth

Through this course, students will be provided the full experience of searching for an internship. Students will also have three synchronous activities with the instructor and career professionals through mock interviews, resume reviews, and group meetings.  (Please note this course is intended for students who have less than 105 cumulative credits; however, exceptions can be made). Email careerengr@umd.edu for more information.

Class Visits: Various departments invite ECS for guest lectures. Topics covered in class visits may include, but are not limited to: tips on using Handshake; resume development; career fair preparation; and networking strategies.

Flexus/Virtus: ECS staff instruct the Flexus/Virtus career development courses, ENES114/116 in the Spring semester of students' first year in the program. The course delves deep into professional development and includes an exclusive networking reception with alumni. Learn more about Flexus: The Dr. Marilyn Berman Pollans WIE Living and Learning Program, which is open to incoming first-year engineering students. Flexus is an ideal program for students who are looking for community, academic support, and ways to develop as future engineers outside of technical courses.  The Flexus community engages closely with the Virtus community, with combined living (mixed gender) and academic seminar components.

ENCO 099/098: This zero-credit course serves two purposes. For domestic students, it is placeholder course for those completing co-ops during the Fall/Spring. For international students, it is a required component of completing CPT. Learn more about registering for ENCO and the various requirements for either case.
