The A. James Clark School of Engineering and the Universidad Pontificia Comillas are launching a  funded research opportunity for Engineering students/faculty from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas!

Program Highlights:

  • Conduct 3-12 months of research at the University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering
  • Opportunities available in all areas of engineering
  • $2600/month stipend for Bachelor's and Masters's students to cover living expenses during your time in the U.S. PhD students and faculty will receive a salary based on their level of experience as determined by the hosting department.
  • Students at the Bachelor's, Master's and PhD level, and faculty are eligible
  • Participants come to the U.S. on a J-1 visa - J-1 Intern visa for students and J-1 Short-Term Scholar visa for faculty members
    • Placements for student interns will generally occur during the regular UMD academic semesters, late August to December and late January to May.  Applicants may extend their program through two semesters or during the summer for a maximum of 12 months.
    • Placements for faculty will generally occur during the summer, but can occur at any time of the year. Faculty can remain for up to 6 months.

Application Process and Requirements for Students:

  1. Work with your home institution to complete their application requirements (Universidad Ponticia Comillas applicants should contact Mr. Alberto Zanmatti (azanmatti@comillas.edu) for more details)
  2. UMD will receive nominations from your home institution
  3. UMD will contact applicants with more information and application instructions. You will need to provide:
    • CV or resume
    • Major area of study
    • Cover letter describing your research interests and research experience/background
    • Unofficial transcript
    • TOEFL/IELTS exam score report if available (interviews will be conducted if English language proficiency exams are not available)
    • Scan of the biographical/signature pages of your passport
  4. Your application will be evaluted and you will be contacted regarding your placement
  1. Faculty supervisors will develop a training plan in coordination with the student intern
  2. Final training plan will be signed by both the faculty supervisor and the student intern
  3. Foreign person screening will be submited by UMD staff on behalf of the student
  4. UMD staff will add the student to the UMD PHR (human resources) and iTerp (visa processing) systems and the student will provided with a University ID 
  5. Student interns will receive an email from the iTerp system and must complete their portion of the applicaiton process  as soon as possible
  6. International Student and Scholar Service (ISSS) will issue the students DS-2019 which will be mailed to the student's preferred address
  7. Students should follow ISSS instructions regarding the J-1 visa application processes and scheduling and appointment with their local embassy
  8. Begin looking for local housing in College Park
  9. Students will receive their visa
  1. Check-in with ISSS per their instructions
  2. Check-in with your faculty supervisor
  3. Check-in with Brian Dillehay in the Office of Global Engineering Leadership (OGEL)
  4. Orientation will be provided by ISSS and your faculty supervisor
  5. Stay connected with ISSS and OGEL regarding cultural activities through the semester
  6. Have a wonderful experience at the University of Maryland!
