Science, Technology, and Society Programming Illuminates the Essential Side of Technical Progress
Innovation is fueled by more than technology, says STS Director David Tomblin. It’s also the result of the nuanced management of social, ethical, and political relationships. Through the STS Scholars program, Engineering Ethics program, and the Science, Technology, Ethics and Policy minor, students learn how to put human needs and well-being first when developing technology.
“Unless you know how to build relationships with people, you’re never really going to be able to fulfill society’s needs,” says Tomblin.
Clubs and Organizations Strengthen Essential Non-technical Skills
"I originally came into UMD Loop wanting to learn as much 'purely technical' stuff as I could. As part of a team, you pick up on these things that you wouldn't realize are useful: how to convey an idea effectively, how to write an email, and how to coordinate funding."

Faculty Provide Insider Insight to Supercharge Student Growth
“At one of my first meetings with Dr. Cadou, he told me to join the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Institution of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He said they would have resources that would be interesting for me to know and beneficial for my future, including internship opportunities and a broad range of connections in my field. I’m a first-gen student, so he helps me think about the things that I might not otherwise know about.”
