Michael Ogunsemowo

Class of 2024
Major: Civil Engineering
Hometown: Waldorf, MD
High School: North Point High School

What Made You Decide to Attend UMD?
I chose UMD because not only is it in great proximity to the DC area, engineering companies, and my family, but most importantly because of the top tier engineering school at the University of Maryland. The engineering school provides so many opportunities for the students to excel which I wanted to be a part of.

Best Experience with a Class or Project
My best experience was in my ENES 100 class where we got to create an invention which also included a presentation. I remember all the work that went into it as well as the presentation results exceeding other groups in quality which made me so proud of our work. We ended up creating a device that would be put on doors where you can communicate with the person inside and vice versa to relay a message without disturbing them.

Favorite Class in Major
ENES 102: Mechanics 1

Favorite Class Out of Major
AASP 200: African Civilization

Student Organizations/Extracurricular Activities
Volunteering: Shepherd's Table Volunteer - (2022 - Present), School involvement: Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation  Vice President (2023 - Present), AO Maryland Campus Ministry Treasurer (2022 - Present), Black Engineering Society, RUF and BCF campus ministries, work for undergraduate admissions and campus food pantry, Church involvement: Assist Ministry Head of Community Outreach Ministry (2023 - Present), Orchestra Ministry (2018 - Present), Parking and Grounds Ministry (2022 - Present), First things First Ministry (2020 - Present), Usher Ministry (2013 - Present), Photography Ministry (2022 - Present)

Favorite On-Campus Event
I love Open house because for my job at Undergraduate admissions we get to help parents and students which always was fun for me.

Favorite Research or Study Abroad Experiences
I studied abroad in Athens, Greece for spring break this year in which I studied sustainability and infrastructure as well as provided solutions to present problems in Athens. Some of the activities included historical site visits, metro construction visit, group sustainability project, bridge and canal analyzation/observation, and Centre and Hellinikon park project visit. This was by far the most enjoyed experience in my life.

Cool Engineering Experience
I think bridge competition in my mechanics 1 class was the coolest engineering experience for me because it took a lot of calculations and meetings but to compete for the strongest bridge really was interesting.
