Currently enrolled engineering students who wish to change to another engineering major within the A. James Clark School of Engineering must complete the following two steps.

Visit the TerpEngage Major Change Request Portal and complete the form that corresponds to your student status.
Important: Major change requests are not complete after this step and will not be processed until all required tasks have been completed in TerpEngage.
- After submitting the TerpEngage Major Change Request, you will receive an email containing a list of required next steps. To have your Change of Major request reviewed, complete and mark all required tasks as complete in TerpEngage, including the Change of Major form.
After submitting your request, your TerpEngage task list will include the required next steps shown below.

After selecting Submit Change of Major Form, students will be directed to the Change of Major task list shown below.

Be sure to complete the appropriate form according to your status and mark the task as complete once finished.
Important: Engineering Academic Services (EAS) will review change of major requests only after the Change of Major form has been completed.
Students will be notified of the decision by email within 10 business days of completing the Change of Major form.
If you plan to change to a major outside the A. James Clark School of Engineering, contact the appropriate college or department for assistance.
If you are currently pursuing a double degree or double major, in addition to submitting the request in TerpEngage, you must also complete the required double degree or double major paperwork for your new major.
Information about Double Major/Double Degree
Current engineering majors who wish to add a double major or double degree should begin the process through the TerpEngage Portal.
- Visit the TerpEngage Portal: “Additional Major Request Form”https://go.umd.edu/majorchange
- After opening the portal, select “Additional Major” from the drop-down menu. Students will then be guided to the Double Major/Double Degree form that must be completed.
Before pursuing a double major or double degree, students are strongly encouraged to contact the advisor in their primary major to discuss their academic plan.

- the difference between a double major and a double degree,
- eligibility guidelines,
- required signatures, and
- printing instructions.

Important Information for CMNS Students
If you are a CMNS major adding Engineering as either your primary or secondary major, you do not need to complete the CMNS Double Major/Double Degree Form. Only the Engineering Double Major/Double Degree Form is required.
If Engineering is your primary major, Engineering Academic Services (EAS) will provide the final signature required for the form. The only exception is for students completing double majors or double degrees within the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS).

Applying for Graduation
Students must submit the Graduation Application form no later than the last day of schedule adjustment for the semester in which they plan to graduate.
Request to Participate in the Engineering Commencement Ceremony (Undergraduate Students)
Students who wish to participate in the Spring Commencement Ceremony should review the University’s commencement participation policy to confirm eligibility.
To participate in the Spring Commencement Ceremony, students must be registered for all remaining degree requirements during the following summer term.
To request permission to participate in the Spring Commencement Ceremony:
- Complete the Commencement Early Participation Request form under the “Attend Commencement” tab.
- Select the ceremony you plan to attend:
- Main Commencement only,
- College/Department Commencement only, or
- Both ceremonies.
- Students will receive an email notification after their request has been reviewed.
Important Notes
- Complete the graduation application on TESTUDO for the semester in which all degree requirements will be completed.
- Submit the Commencement Early Participation Request form well in advance of the ceremony to allow processing time.
- Participation in the Engineering commencement ceremony does not guarantee graduation from the University.
- Students approved to participate in the spring commencement ceremony are not considered spring graduates unless all degree requirements are completed during the spring term.
- Students officially graduate in the semester in which all degree requirements are completed.

Graduation Confirmation Letter Request
The Graduation Confirmation Letter Request is available only after:
- successful completion of all remaining coursework, and
- fulfillment of all University degree requirements.
This request is available for undergraduate students only.
Graduate students should contact their academic department for assistance.
International Students
The University does not issue invitation letters for guests traveling to the United States to attend commencement ceremonies. Invitation letters are not required by U.S. embassies for issuance of a B-2 tourist visa.
Graduating students may provide their relatives with:
The B-2 visa category is intended for tourism-related activities, including:
- sightseeing,
- visiting family or friends, and
- medical treatment.
No invitation letter is required when traveling to the United States for tourism or family visits.
Permission to Enroll (PTE)
All current University of Maryland students in the A. James Clark School of Engineering who wish to take a course at another institution must submit a Permission to Enroll (PTE) form and receive approval from the Clark School before registering.
Eligibility Requirements
To submit a PTE form, students must:
- Have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
- Have completed all UMD and host institution prerequisites
- Not be in a credit overload:
- Maximum 18 credits (Fall/Spring)
- Maximum 8 credits (each Summer session)
- Maximum 4 credits (Winter)
Not Eligible to Take Courses Elsewhere If:
Students are not eligible if:
- They are repeating a course (must be taken at UMD unless the grade is a “W”)
- Their GPA is below 2.0
- They are within their final 30 UMD credits (unless approved via Exception to Policy form)
- They are transfer students who have already transferred:
- More than 60 credits from a 2-year school (pre–Fall 2022)
- More than 70 credits from a 2-year school (Fall 2022 and later)
- More than 90 credits from a 4-year school

Processing & Notification
- Processing time: 3–10 business days during peak periods
- You will receive an email from workflow@umd.edu when your request is reviewed
- Check the “Note” section in the email for your decision
After Completing the Course
- Request that your official transcript be sent to the UMD Office of the Registrar.
- Verify that your credits have posted in Testudo (Unofficial Transcript).
- If the credits have not posted, confirm with the other institution that the official transcript was sent to UMD.

Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s (BS/MS) Program
With departmental approval and completion of program requirements, an undergraduate degree-seeking student may request admission to the combined Bachelor’s/Master’s (BS/MS) program.
In this program, graduate-level courses initially taken for undergraduate credit may also be applied toward graduate degree requirements at the University of Maryland.

Undergraduate students with approval may request to take a course for graduate credit only.

- Departmental academic advisor signs approval and indicates how the course applies to the degree
- Instructor of the graduate-level course signs approval
- College certication approved by the School of Engineering (1131S GLMH)
Major Change for Newly Admitted Students
Newly admitted students who wish to change their major outside of Engineering during orientation must contact the University Admissions Office.
