Twelve Clark School Students Awarded Prestigious NSF Research Fellowships
Twelve University of Maryland (UMD) A. James Clark School of Engineering graduate and undergraduate students have been awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships, the most prestigious fellowship awarded by the NSF and the oldest fellowship of its kind.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) graduate student Hannah Nilsson will spend a year at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, thanks to an NSF Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide (GROW) award.

Fire Protection Team wins IAFSS Award
An image by a research team from the Department of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) has garnered Best Fire Science Image Award at the 11th Symposium of the International Association of Fire Safety Science (IAFSS).

Weinstein Named Langley Aerospace Research Student Scholar
Department of Aerospace Engineering student Rose Weinstein was selected as a Langley Aerospace Research Student Scholar (LARSS). The LARSS Program is one of NASA’s most prestigious and successful student research programs and has been ranked among the top ten best internships in the nation.

Weiner Wins 2014 Amelia Earhart Fellowship
Aerospace engineering graduate student Elizabeth Weiner was awarded the 2014 Amelia Earhart Fellowship from Zontia International. Zonta International is a global organization of executives and professionals working to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy, and the organization awards only 35 fellowships worldwide annually.

Aerospace Engineering Students Win at the AIAA Student Paper Conference
Aerospace Engineering students Gino Perrotta and Brooks Muller placed at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Region 1 Student Paper Conference held in Ithaca, N.Y. April 25-26. Over 70 papers were presented during the two-day conference, and almost half of the papers presented were by University of Maryland students.

Five Aerospace Engineering Students Win Honors at AIAA Conference
Clark School Aerospace Engineering students won three out of the top four spots in the graduate student paper competition at the 2013 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Region I Young Professional, Student, and Education (YPSE) Conference held November 15, 2013 at John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Aerospace engineering student Bernadette Cannon was selected to receive the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation (ARCS) 2014-2015 Wanda M. Austin Undergraduate Scholar.

Rafael Setra Named One of Three 2014 UMD Goldwater Scholars
Electrical Engineering and Mathematics major Rafael Setra was one of three University of Maryland students awarded scholarships by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, which encourages students to pursue advanced study and careers in the sciences, engineering and mathematics.

Two Clark School Students Named University Innovation Fellows
Two Clark School engineering students Atin Mittra and Meenu Singh have been named University Innovation Fellows by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter). Sixty-six university students were selected from 45 higher education institutions across the U.S.

UMD Hackathon Team Featured on NPR
Students from the University of Maryland’s Terrapin Hackers team were featured by National Public Radio’s (NPR) “All Things Considered” for their first-place finish in the Fall 2013 Major League Hacking (MLH) Season.

Three UMD Undergraduates Win Top Prize at LAHacks
Three undergraduate electrical and computer engineering students from the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering won the grand prize at LAHacks, billed as the largest hackathon in the United States to date. Jake Rye, Charlie Hulcher, and Shariq Hashme, who is also completing a degree in computer science, were recognized for their winning hardware hack, “Tred,” which allows for a person to be immersed in a virtual reality environment.

After introducing a new car and overcoming a course hazard, Team Thirsty Turtles took fifth place in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ (AIChE) mid-Atlantic regional Chem-E Car Competition, held at the University of Virginia in March. For the fourth year in a row, the University of Maryland team’s top-five finish earned it a spot at the national competition, to be held at AIChE's annual meeting this fall in Atlanta.

UMD Team Wins AHS MAV Competition
A University of Maryland (UMD) student team won American Helicopter Society's (AHS) 2nd Annual Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) Student Challenge. The UMD team—dubbed CDLC Dolphin—was led by Research Associate Derrick Yeo and included Aerospace Engineering graduate student Elena Shrestha, undergraduate Cody Karcher and Assistant Research Scientist Vikram Hrishikeshavan (Ph.D., '11).

UMD Team Receives RevCon Award
A University of Maryland (UMD) team was selected for an award in the 2014 International Field-Reversible Thermal Connector (RevCon) Challenge with their proposal for "Low-Resistance Seamless Wedge Thermal Connectors." 

Wood Stove DecathlonWood Stove Decathlon Team Featured in Popular Mechanics
Team Mulciber, a group of students from the University of Maryland’s Departments of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Environmental Science & Technology, was highlighted in the March 2014 issue of Popular Mechanics for its production of a wood-burning stove with emissions described by the magazine as “so low, they were almost unmeasurable.”

Maryland’s EWB Team Implements Chlorinator in Peru
The University of Maryland’s Engineers Without Borders (EWB) team traveled to Compone, Peru this past January to implement a drinking water disinfection system. During the trip, students and faculty worked alongside community members to construct a functioning chlorinator and to educate the community on water-related health issues.
