PECASE Award WinnersBergbreiter and Paley Honored at White House Ceremony
Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Sarah Bergbreiter and Aerospace Engineering Associate Professor Derek Paley, who both hold joint appointments with the Institute for Systems Research, were honored at a White House Ceremony, April 14, 2014, as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the United States Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

University of Maryland assistant professor Liangbing Hu has been named a “Campus Star” by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). The distinction is granted to society members who have demonstrated excellence in engineering education and research. Over the next several months, Campus Stars will be profiled on the ASEE web site, its social media outlets, and in its flagship publication, Prism. The program is part of the ASEE’s efforts to raise awareness of the importance and impact of engineering education.

Munday Awarded SPIE Early Career Achievement Award
Assistant Professor Jeremy Munday (IREAP/ECE) has been named the recipient of the 2014 SPIE Early Career Achievement Award. Specifically, Prof. Munday is being honored for his "innovative experimental and theoretical work on photonic engineering for solar energy devices and Casimir forces."

International Association for Hydrogen Energy Honors Wachsman for Fuel Cell Research
University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC) Director and Professor Eric Wachsman's “superior service and exemplary research” have earned him the International Association for Hydrogen Energy's (IAHE) Sir William Grove Award.
Wachsman also received the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining’s(IOM3) 2014 Pfeil Award for a paper describing the use of titanium dioxide for solar water disinfection. The innovation, the result an international collaboration with researchers at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, is designed to produce safer drinking water in remote locations and disaster areas, particularly those without electricity.

Galloway imageGalloway Discusses Climate Change on Capitol Hill
On Thursday, March 13, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Research Professor Gerald Galloway addressed the national security impacts of climate change before the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change on Capitol Hill. A retired U.S. Army brigadier general, Galloway was one of three military leaders invited to give expert insights on the topic.

Hahn Receives 2014 ONR YIP Award
Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Dr. Jin-Oh Hahn has received a Young Investigator Program (YIP) award by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) under the Department of the Navy.

Gupta Receives AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Award
Department of Mechanical Engineering Distinguished University Professor Ashwani Gupta has been awarded the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Air Breathing Propulsion Award for 2014. AIAA recognized Gupta for his "outstanding contributions to the understanding and development of advanced high intensity combustors for near zero emission high performance air breathing propulsion.”

Chopra imageChopra Receives Inaugural Wang Shicun Award, Published New Book
Aerospace Engineering Professor Inderjit Chopra was awarded the inaugural Wang Shicun Award at the 2nd Asian/Australian Rotorcraft Forum (ARF) and the 4th International Basic Research Conference on Rotorcraft Technology at Tianjin, China on September 12, 2013. Chopra received the award for his "outstanding work in education, research and development of rotorcraft technology.”
Chopra has also published a new book, "Smart Structures Theory," as part of Cambridge University Press's Aerospace Series.

Bentley Receives ACS Division of Biotechnology’s Marvin J. Johnson Award
Fischell Department of Bioengineering Department Chair and Robert E. Fischell Distinguished Professor William Bentley was awarded the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Division of Biotechnology’s Marvin J. Johnson Award in Microbial and Biochemical Technology. Bentley delivered a lecture and was formally honored at the 247th ACS National Meeting & Exposition in March.

Pines, Abts Featured in ASEE PRISM Magazine for Leadership in Exploring New AP Course in Engineering
Clark School Dean and Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering Darryll Pines and Research Associate Research Professor Leigh Abts (Bioengineering/College of Education) are featured in the April 2014 issue of American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE) PRISM magazine for their leadership in exploring opportunities to expand the next generation of engineers.

Kofinas Featured in Chemical & Engineering News
Fischell Department of Bioengineering Professor and Associate Dean Peter Kofinas was featured in Chemical & Engineering News for his work with polymer nanofibers for use in surgery as a sealant, hemostatic, and buttress for tissue repair. The article titled, “Airbrushed Polymers Could Seal Surgical Incisions,” focuses on how researchers have proposed replacing sutures with sticky, biodegradable mats of polymer nanofibers to seal surgical incisions and promote healing.

Bergbreiter's Robotics Research Featured in NSF's Science Nation
Department of Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Sarah Bergbreiter's robotics research was featured in National Science Foundation's online magazine Science Nation. The article and video 'As fast as their tiny 'bot' legs will carry them!' highlights Bergbreiter's NSF funded research in building insect-inspired micro-robots.

Mechanical Engineering George E. Dieter Professor Michael Pecht, with co-author Kailash Kapur, recently published a new book titled Reliability Engineering, part of the Wiley Series in Systems Engineering and Management.

Professor Emerita Honored for Encouraging Women to Choose Careers in Chemical Sciences
 The American Chemical Society (ACS) has honored Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) Professor Emerita Sandra Greer with its national Award for Encouraging Women Into Careers in the Chemical Sciences.

Sriram Edits New Book on Plant Metabolism
Department of Chemical and Bioengineering (ChBE) assistant professor Ganesh Sriram is the editor of and a contributor to a new book on methods for the study of plant metabolism, now available from Springer’s Humana Press imprint.

Women in Engineering Director Honored by University
The University of Maryland President’s Commission on Women’s Issues has honored Clark School Women in Engineering (WIE) Director Paige Smith, Ph.D., with the 2014 Outstanding Exempt Staff Member Award.

Ohadi Awarded USM Regents’ Faculty Award
Department of Mechanical Engineering Professor Michael Ohadi was selected as a recipient of a 2014 University System of Maryland (USM) Regents’ Faculty Award for Excellence in Innovation. This award is the highest honor that the Board bestows in recognition of exemplary faculty achievement.

Anisimov Elected to AIChE Fellowship
Professor Mikhail Anisimov (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering/Institute for Physical Science and Technology) has been elected to Fellowship in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Founded in 1908, the AIChE is the leading professional society for chemical engineers in the United States and around the world, with over 40,000 members from 90 countries.

Briber Elected Fellow of the Neutron Scattering Society of America
Professor and MSE Chair Robert M. Briber has been elected to fellowship in the Neutron Scattering Society of America (NSSA). The organization recognized him for “elucidating the structure and dynamics of polymeric and biopolymeric materials and dedicated service to the neutron scattering community.”

Kishek Named 2013 APS Fellow
Research Prof. Rami Kishek (IREAP, ECE) has been named a 2013 American Physical Society Fellow. APS fellows are limited to one half of one percent of the total APS membership; in being named a fellow, Prof. Kishek is joining an elite group of fellow researchers whose contributions to the theory and applications of physics inform and advance our understanding of the universe, from the smallest to the largest particles.

Wereley imageWereley Elected SPIE Fellow and Editor of New Book
Department of Aerospace Engineering Chair and Minta Martin Professor of Aerospace Engineering Norman Wereley has been elected International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) Fellow.
Wereley is also lead editor and a contributing author for a new book Magnetorheology: Advances and Applications published by the Royal Society of Chemistry as part of their series on smart materials.

Sandborn Named IEEE Fellow
Department of Mechanical Engineering Professor Peter Sandborn was elevated to Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow.
