UMD Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program Wins National Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education
The United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) has selected the University of Maryland Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program (EIP) as the first-place winner for an Excellence in Entrepreneurship Education award in the Outstanding Specialty Entrepreneurship Program category, university officials announced today.

Fischell Department of Bioengineering Professor John Fisher and 2011 Fischell Fellow Anthony Melchiorri have developed a unique biocompatible polymer that FormaSTEM, the company they co-founded, uses to create vascular grafts, which act as artificial blood vessels. Once implanted, the grafts support and serve as a template for the growth of blood vessel tissue.

Oculus VR CEO and former Clark School student Brendan Iribe spoke at our UMD Bitcamp Hackathon event, which took place just a short time after the sale to Facebook was announced.

FiscalNote Named Coolest College Startup
FiscalNote, a startup company co-founded by University of Maryland student Jonathan Chen, was featured in Inc. Magazine’s annual list of “America’s Coolest College Startups.” FiscalNote was selected from a list of nearly 100 college startups from all across America. Inc. Magazine calls their top 16 “the cream of the college entrepreneurship crop” and lauds them for achieving so much so early on in their careers.

UMD Alumni Hatch Sub-$300 Consumer 3D Printer, Raise $3.3 Million on Kickstarter
Two University of Maryland graduates have designed The Micro, a consumer-friendly, sub-$300 3D printer, and are quickly staging one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns of all-time to produce it, hauling in $3.3 million with more than 10,000 backers. The Micro raced past its $50,000 goal in just 11 minutes and hit the $1 million mark in 25 hours, faster than the Pebble watch, which took 28 hours.

Team MulciberFire Protection Startup Wins Awards in MIT Clean Energy Prize Competition
MF Fire, a startup company with roots in the University of Maryland’s Department of Fire Protection Engineering, won the $25,000 Energy Efficiency Track Prize and a People’s Choice Award in the Grand Final round of the MIT Clean Energy Prize competition, held in Boston on April 28. The young company presented Mulciber, an innovative, 93% efficient, wood-burning stove with “almost unmeasurable” emissions.

Faculty Founded Techno-Sciences, Inc. Acquired by McMurdo Group
Techno-Sciences, Inc. (TSi), a company founded by Clark School of Engineering Professor Emeritus Lee Davisson and Professor and Associate Chair Gilmer Blankenship, both of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), was acquired on May 6, 2014, by McMurdo Group, a French developer of satellite-based search and rescue technology, including distress beacons, and monitoring software.

Mtech TAP Incubator Graduate Neuralstem Inc. Closes $20 Million Investment
Neuralstem Inc., a 2001 graduate of the Mtech Technology Advancement Program (TAP) incubator, announced that it closed on a $20 million investment from leading institutional and accredited investors in a registered direct placement of 6,872,859 shares of common stock at a price of $2.91 per share.

Pixelligent Granted Innovation Research Award for Next-Generation OLED Lighting
Pixelligent Technologies, an Mtech TAP incubator graduate and MIPS funding recipient, recently announced it was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant by the Department of Energy (DOE).

Shapiro’s Otomagnetics Recipient of BioMaryland Center Award
Shapiro imageOtomagnetics, a startup with roots in the A. James Clark School of Engineering, was named one of seven innovative life sciences companies to receive a Biotechnology Development Award through the BioMaryland Center, an office within Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development. The BioMaryland Center awarded up to $200,000 to each of the companies and one educational institution. Led by Fischell Department of Bioengineering and Institute for Systems Research Professor Benjamin Shapiro, Otomagnetics is a magnetic particle drug delivery system for treatment of sudden hearing loss, and, eventually, common ear infections.

Clark School Faculty Recognized at Celebration of Innovation and Partnerships
The University of Maryland’s Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) hosted the Celebration of Innovation and Partnerships (formerly Invention of the Year Awards) reception on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at the University of Maryland University House. Researchers from the A. James Clark School of Engineering were involved in all three Outstanding Invention of 2013 Awards and the 2014 UMD Corporate Connector of the Year.
