 The University of Maryland is the lead institution for an eight-university consortium forming NEXTOR II, a research program focused on aviation operations research. The new seven-year contract with the Federal Aviation Administration will extend and expand the work of the original National Center of Excellence for Aviation Operations Research (NEXTOR). Research expenditures could total as much as $60 million over the length of the contract.
 The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded a four-year, $1.8 million Research Project Grant to Associate Professor Bruce Yu (joint, Fischell Department of Bioengineering and School of Pharmacy, pictured) and Professor Zygmunt Karol Gryczynski (Department of Molecular Biology and Immunology, University of North Texas) for their proposal, "Novel Fluorophores for Molecular and Cellular Imaging." Gryczynski and Yu are the principal investigators on the joint project.
 Three Clark School professors have won Defense University Research Instrumentation Program funding to support the purchase of research instrumentation. The awards are expected to range from $50,000 to $990,000 and average approximately $230,000. The winners are:
• Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering Bala Balachandran (pictured) received an award for his project "Opto-acoustic characterization of micro-air-vehicle wings."
• Professor and Interim Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Rama Chellappa received an award for "Opportunistic sensing
research."
• Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Institute
for Systems Research Shihab Shamma received an award for
"Research in audio-visual saliency and attention."
