TrentoThe Institute for Systems Research and the University of Maryland’s longstanding and successful relationship with researchers from the Autonomous Province of Trento, Italy, has led to a formal cementing of the partnership. The joint efforts will target bioengineering, renewable energy, nanomaterials, microsystems and education. The research and education role of the University of Trento is particularly significant, and a memorandum of understanding between the University of Maryland and the University of Trento is being signed. A second memorandum of understanding between the State of Maryland and the Autonomous Province of Trento is in the works. The partnership is beginning with research, and an education component will be added in the near future.

MATOCMetropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC) is a new regional partnership of the Maryland State Highway Administration, Virginia Department of Transportation, District Department of Transportation, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The goal of MATOC is to improve how agencies share information, which enables transportation agencies to make better decisions regarding traffic and transit management throughout the region. MATOC is administered by the Clark School's Center for Advanced Transportation Technology.

Isabel LloydDepartment of Materials Science and Engineering associate professor Isabel Lloyd will lead a new three-year summer program for regional community college faculty designed to increase the success of students with associate degrees who transfer into the Clark School's engineering programs. The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program, "Connecting with Community Colleges," will develop strategies for implementing new curricula in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses at the 100-200 levels and strengthen institutional relationships between community colleges and the University of Maryland.

Peter KofinasThe Clark School has announced the first class of ENGAGED Faculty. The ENGAGED Faculty were nominated by Clark School undergraduates because they are approachable and accessible, take a genuine interest in and have concern for their students, especially outside of the classroom, have high expectations of their students and encourage students and provide advice and support on academic and extracurricular activities. The six faculty members in the inaugural class include:

The Center for Integrated Transportation Systems Management (CITSM) of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering organized a one-day demonstration/exhibition of prominent university transportation products that are developed with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) sponsorship, in partnership with the DOT’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration. The purpose of the event was to highlight the accomplishments and show the impact of DOT’s college- and university-based research and education programs. In addition, this event highlighted the transfer of technology from the university transportation programs in use at various federal, state and local agencies. CITSM projects led by Professors Mehdi Kalantari Khandani and Gang-Len Chang were selected for presentation at the event.

The University of Maryland and Tenable Network Security have announced a new partnership to establish collaborative activities in the area of cybersecurity. The partnership will promote cybersecurity education, research and technology development through the university's newly-established Maryland Cybersecurity Center. UM and Tenable plan to leverage one another's resources, knowledge, and unique perspectives to develop innovative solutions to cybersecurity challenges.

The University of Maryland has created a new cybersecurity seminar series made possible by a sponsorship from Google and organized by the Maryland Cybersecurity Center. The Google and University of Maryland Cybersecurity Seminar Series features a diverse group of speakers from industry, academia and government, addressing a broad range of topics related to cybersecurity, including technology, policy and economics. Invited speakers also will examine the impact that cybersecurity threats and protective measures are having on privacy, identity, social networks, business and national security.

A new Cybersecurity Scholars Program will be offered this summer at the University of Maryland. This research experience for undergraduates will offer students the opportunity to participate in teams that will conduct research for nine weeks during the summer. Each team consists of one graduate fellow, one faculty mentor, and up to four scholars. The scholars will be trained in team skills, project organization and research competencies. This program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Clark School. The effort is being led by Prof. Michel Cukier.

The University of Maryland hosted a Commercial Nuclear Power Cybersecurity conference in May. Academic leaders at the university together with individuals from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the commercial nuclear power industry, and other partner organizations explored new regulatory and industry-led initiatives to protect nuclear power plants from cyber-based threats. The event was organized by the Maryland Cybersecurity Center and the Clark School’s Office of Advanced Engineering Education.

The University of Maryland will host a U.S. Cyber Camp for high school students on the College Park campus this summer in partnership with CyberWatch and the U.S. Cyber Challenge. Participating students will learn about the field of cybersecurity and skills related to operating systems, system administration, networking, programming and more.
