Ashish Bagai (Ph.D.
’90, M.S. ’92 and Ph.D. ’95, aerospace engineering [AE]) was lead rotor designer on
a team of Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. engineers who received the prestigious Robert J. Collier
Trophy—one of aviation’s highest honors—for building the new XT2D helicopter, which can
fly 100 mph faster than current production models, with increased maneuverability,
endurance and high-altitude performance.
C. Frank Wheatley (B.S.
'51, electrical engineering [EE]) has been elected an Institute for Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Pioneer, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon
IEEE members, to recognize his significant and transformative impact on the field of power electronics.
Michael Griffin (Ph.D.
'77, AE), former administrator of NASA, is president-elect of the American Institute
of Aeronautics and Astronautics board of directors.
Hamid Jafarkhani (M.S.
'94 and Ph.D. ’97, EE) was recently elected as a fellow of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science in the Information, Computing, and Communication section.
He also recently was named the Conexant-Broadcom Endowed Chair at the University of California, Irvine.
Steve Tjoa (B.S. '04,
computer engineering, M.S. '06 and Ph.D. '11, EE) has received a National Science
Foundation Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in collaboration with Imagine Research, Inc., in
San Francisco, Calif. He will develop machine learning algorithms that annotate and search
for sound objects from large-scale multimedia collections.
Michael Bustamante (B.S. '11, fire protection engineering [FPE]) has been
selected as a NASA Space Technology Research Fellow.
Alumnus Ion
Matei (M.S. '09 and Ph.D. ’10, EE) has received a fellowship with the National Institute of Standards
and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md. He is working in the newly created system engineering
group in NIST's Engineering Laboratory, focusing on applying model-based systems
engineering techniques in manufacturing.
Thomas Herald (M.S. '86, EE) has been appointed to serve as a
senior fellow of Lockheed Martin Corporation's
Global Training and Logistics business unit. He's also an adjunct professor for Stevens
Institute of Technology and the University of Central Florida.
Michael D. Smith (B.S. ’91, EE, and M.S. ’96, telecommunications engineering)
was recently promoted
to full professor of information technology and marketing at the Heinz School of Business, Carnegie
Mellon University.
Pavan
Turaga (M.S. '08 and Ph.D. ’09, EE) will join Arizona State University as assistant professor in
interactive media and electrical and computer engineering.
Ashok Veeraraghavan
(M.S. '04 and Ph.D. ’08, EE) has received a faculty appointment in the Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering at Rice University.
James D. Smith (B.S. '83, EE) has been named chief patent judge at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Rajeev K. Arora (B.S. '00, FPE) was among Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine's 2011 40 Under 40 awardees.
Sameer Hemmady (M.S. '04, telecommunications engineering, and Ph.D. '06, EE) was awarded the IEEE Outstanding
Young Engineer Award for 2011 by the IEEE Albuquerque, N.M., chapter to recognize his work
on reconfigurable stealth-antennas, counter-IED technologies and electromagnetic weapons
design, as well as high-power microwave effects and active denial technologies.
Doyin Adewodu (M.Eng ’10) is a recipient of the 2011 Black Engineer of the Year –
Modern Day Technology Leader award. The recipients of the award are young African-American
professionals with 5-10 years of professional experience who are now working to shape the
technology and science of the future.

Andrew M. Forbes (M.Eng. '10) has received the 2010 Young Engineer of the Year
award from the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers (MDSPE). He serves as the
secretary on the board of directors for MDSPE.
Philip J. DiNenno (B.S. '77, FPE) is the recipient
of the 2011 National Fire Protection Association's Paul C. Lamb Award in honor of his
volunteer service.
Ioannis Minis (Ph.D. ’88, mechanical engineering [ME]), published Supply Chain
Optimization, Design, and Management: Advances and Intelligent Methods (IGI Global).
Frank Kaul (B.S. ’88, civil engineering), a senior associate/senior structural
engineer from Dewberry’s Baltimore office, has been elected president of the American Society of
Civil Engineers’ Maryland chapter.
Steve Wolin (B.S. '99 and M.S. '00, FPE) was on a team of consultants that received
the 2011 Fire Protection Research Foundation Medal for his project "Antifreeze Solutions in Home
Fire Sprinkler Systems."
Anubhav Datta (M.S. '01 and Ph.D. '04, AE) was on a team of researchers who won the Best Paper Award at the prestigious Alfred P. Gessow Forum 67. The paper was titled "Experimental Investigation and Fundamental Understanding of a Slowed UH-60A Rotor at High Advance Ratios."
Glen Henshaw (M.S. '98 and Ph.D. '03, AE) is the co-recipient of the American
Society of Civil Engineers Best Paper of 2010 for "A Variational Technique for Spacecraft
Trajectory Planning." His co-author on the paper was his former advisor, Prof. Robert Sanner (AE).
The Clark School has honored Aris Mardirossian (B.S. '74 and M.S. '75, ME) with
its 2011 Distinguished Alumnus award for his entrepreneurial spirit.
