Sarah BergbreiterThree Clark School professors have received 2011 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Awards. Assistant Professor Sarah Bergbreiter (mechanical engineering [ME]/Institute for Systems Research [ISR]) received an award for "Microrobot Legs for Fast Locomotion over Rough Terrain." Assistant Professor John Cumings (Department of Materials Science and Engineering [MSE]) received his award for a proposal titled "Frustration on Nanomagnetic Lattices." Assistant Professor Joonil Seog (joint, MSE and Fischell Department of Bioengineering [BioE]) received his award for a proposal titled "Direct Observation of Dynamic Self-Assembly at the Single Molecule and Nanoscale Level.”

Michael Pecht ME's George E. Dieter Professor Michael Pecht received the inaugural Lifetime Reliability Achievement Award from the Indian Society of Reliability, Maintainability and Safety for his “significant contributions in the area of product reliability, prognostics & health management of electronic components.”

Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and Research and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher K. J. Ray Liu has been selected for inclusion in the Institute for Scientific Information’s list of computer science researchers whose publications have received high numbers of citations from fellow researchers and scientists.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Associate Professor Ahmet Aydilek has been selected as the 2011 recipient of the prestigious American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) Walter Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize. He was selected for his contributions to the area of sustainable geotechnical infrastructure design, microbiological soil improvement, and image-based geomaterial characterization.

ME Professor Abhijit Dasgupta received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Electronic and Photonic Packaging Division’s Mechanics Award in recognition of his numerous contributions to electronics packaging and reliability research, including the development of solutions and micromechanics approaches for electronics packaging and composites.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has appointed William L. Crentz Centennial Chair in Energy Research and University of Maryland Energy Research Center Director Eric Wachsman (joint, MSE and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering [ChBE]) to the Board of Directors of the Maryland Clean Energy Center.

CEE Professor Allen P. Davis was recently named a Diplomate, Water Resources Engineer (D.WRE) of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers, a subsidiary of the ASCE. The D.WRE represents strong professional ethics and a commitment to life-long learning and continuing professional development. Davis also will serve on a National Research Council committee to review the EPA's economic analysis of water quality standards for nutrients in lakes and flowing waters in Florida.

Clark School Dean and Farvardin Professor Darryll Pines has been elected to serve on the Engineering Deans Council Executive Board.

Associate Professor Jeffrey Herrmann (ME/ISR) recently served on a panel providing information to the Committee on Prepositioned Medical Countermeasures for the Public, a National Academies' Institute of Medicine committee on health sciences policy.

The Maryland Science Center has named ChBE Assistant Professor Ganesh Sriram its 2011 Maryland Outstanding Young Engineer.

Members of the Smart Structures Laboratory of the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center, along with collaborators at Boeing, the U.S. Army Aviation Applied Technology Directorate, Honeywell, and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, have won the 2011 Harry T. Jensen Award from the American Helicopter Society for an outstanding contribution to the improvement of vertical flight aircraft reliability, maintainability, and/or safety through improved design brought to fruition during the preceding year. Department of Aerospace Engineering (AE) Professor Inderjit Chopra is director of the Gessow Rotorcraft Center.

James V. Green, director of entrepreneurship education and director of the Hinman CEOs Program in the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), took first place in the 2011 3E Learning Innovative Entrepreneurship Education Competition for his "Team Challenge of Risk and Reward" activity.

Clark School Dean Darryll Pines and his former student advisee Ashish Purekar (B.S. '97, M.S. '00 and Ph.D. '06, AE) will receive a best paper award in structural dynamics and control from the ASME for "Damage Detection in Thin Composite Laminates Using Piezoelectric Phased Sensor Arrays and Guided Lamb Wave Interrogation," which was published in the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures in July 2010.

ME Professor Abhijit Dasgupta, along with ME Research Associate Moustafa Al-Bassyiouni and Ph.D. candidate Cholmin Choi, was named winner of the 2010 R.A. Evans and P.K. McElroy Best Paper Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for his contribution to the paper “Improved Reliability Testing with Multiaxial Electrodynamics Vibration.”

Professor Mikhail Anisimov has been elected to the membership of the Cosmos Club, a private Washington, D.C., social club that serves as a community for professionals "of intellectual distinction" in the arts and humanities, literature and the sciences.

ISR Director Reza Ghodssi (ECE/ISR) was one of two U.S. delegates at the 17th World Micromachine Summit. The event provides a snapshot of worldwide micro-nano technology initiatives in industrial, academic and government organizations. Two to five key people from the most important regions and countries in the microtechnology arena participate as delegates.

Patrick O’SheaThe University of Maryland has selected Patrick O’Shea, former chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as its new vice president for research.


C. D. (Dan) Mote, Jr.Former UM president C. D. (Dan) Mote, Jr., ME professor at the Clark School, has been named a University System of Maryland Regents Professor. Regents Professors are recognized for scholarly achievements and exceptional service to the system and to their respective institutions.


Fischell Department of Bioengineering professors William E. Bentley and Gregory Payne have received two of the University System of Maryland's 2011 Board of Regents' Faculty Awards for Scholarship, Research, or Creative Activity.

ECE Professor K. J. Ray Liu has been appointed Christine Yurie Kim Eminent Professor of Information Technology at the Clark School. Liu was selected in recognition of his sustained and influential scientific and scholarly work in the area of signal processing and communications.

Professor Avis Cohen (biology/ISR) has been named a 2011-2012 Distinguished Scholar-Teacher by the University of Maryland. Cohen is the project director for the university's new ADVANCE Award from the National Science Foundation.

ME Professor Balakumar Balachandran has been selected to lead the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Professor James Milke is the new chair the Department of Fire Protection Engineering (FPE). Minta Martin Professor of Engineering Rama Chellappa (ECE/University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies [UMIACS]/computer science [CS]) has been named interim chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Professor Carol Espy-Wilson (ECE/ISR) has been selected as an ADVANCE Professor at the Clark School. Espy-Wilson will serve as the ADVANCE Professor for Women Faculty of Color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and will work alongside AE Professor and Associate Dean for Research Alison Flatau, another ADVANCE Professor in the Clark School.

Minta Martin Professor of Engineering and ECE Interim Chair Rama Chellappa (ECE/UMIACS/CS) has been awarded the Clark School’s 2011 Poole and Kent Senior Faculty Teaching Award for his course development work and enthusiasm in teaching.

Associate Professor Dimitrios Goulias (CEE) is the recipient of the Clark School’s 2011 Faculty Service Award for his work with student groups and volunteering across campus.

KEYNOTES / CHAIRS

John S. BarasProfessor John S. Baras (ECE/ISR) gave the invited plenary lecture at the First IEEE International Conference on Cyber Technology in Automation, Control and Intelligent Systems. His lecture was titled "Component-based Architectures for the Synthesis of Intelligent Networked Systems."


Isaak MayergoyzAlford L. Ward Professor and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Isaak Mayergoyz (ECE) was a keynote speaker at the 8th International Symposium on Hysteresis Modeling and Micromagnetics. The title of his talk was "Plasmon Resonances in Nanoparticles, Their Applications to Magnetics and Relation to the Riemann Hypothesis."


Professor Michel Cukier (ME/ECE/ISR) gave the invited keynote address on June 27 at the fifth Workshop on Recent Advances on Intrusion-Tolerant Systems in Hong Kong. Cukier’s talk was titled “Empirical Studies in Cybersecurity.”

ECE Professor K. J. Ray Liu delivered a keynote address at Virginia Tech's 2011 Wireless Symposium. His talk was titled "Cognitive Radio Games."

Derek A. PaleyAssistant Professor Derek A. Paley (AE/ISR) has co-authored an undergraduate textbook with Princeton University Professor Jeremy Kasdin titled Engineering Dynamics: A Comprehensive Introduction.


K. J. Ray LiuK. J. Ray Liu has co-authored a new book titled Behavior Dynamics in Media-Sharing Social Networks with his former advisees, ECE alumnae W. Sabrina Lin (Ph.D. '09, EE) and H. Vicky Zhao (Ph.D. '04, EE)



A second edition of The Control Handbook, a three-volume reference set edited by Professor William S. Levine (ECE/ISR), has been released.

Scheduling in Wireless Networks is a new book co-authored by Professor Tony Ephremides (ECE/ISR) and alumna Anna Pantelidou (Ph.D. ’09, EE).

CEE Professors Bilal Ayyub and Richard McCuen co-authored Probability, Statistics, and Reliability for Engineers and Scientists, Third Edition.

ISR Director Reza Ghodssi co-edited the new MEMS Materials and Processes Handbook, an exhaustive design reference for researchers studying new materials, properties of known materials and specific processes available for MEMS fabrication. 

Professor John S. Baras (ECE/ISR) is the co-editor of a new book titled Decision and Game Theory for Security.

ME Assistant Professor Teng Li was recently appointed lead guest editor of the Journal of Nanomaterials "Annual Focus Issue Series on Low Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials." Prof. Li will work with three other co-editors from Sandia National Laboratory, Penn State University and Brown University on this annual focus issue series.

Mohammad Modarres served as an expert on nuclear power safety for The Atlantic, The Washington Post and others.
